Torque Question

Post by antsa »

Just got my Sako AI .222 back from the smiths. It's been pillar-bedded and cerakoted. Anyone out there who's pillar-bedded? If so, would you mind revealing how much torque you used for the action screws? Or do you just tighten them up against the pillars?

Cheers

Research is wonderful - though surprised you didnt ask the person you paid to bed the rifle.

Nathan Foster from terminal Ballistics NZ (extensive experience) recommends the following for action bolt torque setttings

● Plastic stock rifles with floating lug: 35 inch-lbs
● Plastic stock with floating lug, bedded: 55 inch-lbs
● Plastic stock rifle, unbedded: 40-45 inch-lbs
● Glass stock rifle with unknown fill: 40-45 inch-lbs
● Glass stock rifle with ali chassis: 55-60 inch-lbs
● Wood stock rifle with floating lug: 35 inch-lbs
● Wood stock, bedded or unbedded but without pillars: 40-45 inch-lbs
● Wood stock rifle, pillar bedded: 55-60 inch-lbs
● Laminate stock rifle, bedded or unbedded but without pillars: 40-45 inch-lbs
● Laminate pillar bedded rifle: 55-60 inch-lbs
● Ali chassis/tube rifle: 55-60 inch-lbs

What makes you think I didn't? Of course I asked him mate. I'm not a f*****g idiot. Hope that surprises you!
There are lots of values circulating on the forums. Real world experience of the actual make of rifle is preferred.

I have a Sako L461 with a Cam Hatcher stock that Jerome Z glass and pillar bedded - I just tighten them up firmly, wouldn't have a clue what torque. It shoots just fine.

Settle champ - ask a question - get an answer: at no stage did you intimate that you had a "touque bracket" in mind, or did I mention that you were or that I inferred you to be a fucking idiot.
So yes my comment stands that I would have been surprised that you didnt ask the person that did the work.

For a Kiwi, he does alright

I tend to go the other way than most people and go a little lighter on the torque.

Generally, too many people over do torque.

Don't get me on a rant about wheel nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I do a bedding job all slot head screws are replaced with cap head screws. The torque limiting factor of a hex key used long arm in is ideal for rifles.
