pic of my new 22lr benchrest machine rest setup
Hi all
well I went to the Sydney Olympic ballistic test range about 6 months ago and saw this simple version of a rifle rest for batch testing ammo, mines a close copy and works perfectly and here's the pic, I suspected that it was me pulling shots with my anschutz 1416 with it's lilja barrel but I am happy to say it was not !!! ... Now I am going to test a barrel tuner that Ill machine up on my lathe as I have found 4 types of ammo that the rifle will shoot into .350 all day long and I think it will do a lot better.
also with this setup I noticed that you can really feel and hear the rifle and barrel vibrate !!!! plus it's great for checking parallax error and tracking on scopes
I am also working on machining up two action vee blocks that clamp into the vice and you mount your action into, this will eliminate any bedding error.. also noticed that the rifle hates tenex but loves eley match OSP

It looks very solid and well thought out and then two loose bits of wood holding the stock?

I thought maybe to stop the clamp marking the barrel?trevort wrote:It looks very solid and well thought out and then two loose bits of wood holding the stock?

Could have used something else, thick rubber pieces instead though?
Just guessing

Looks like it will do the job. I used a vice off my drill press to hold one of my 22lr on a bench, didnt quite have enough packing and it left some marks on the fore end.

Re: pic of my new 22lr benchrest machine rest setup
thanks for your reply's the timber is there so that I don't mark the stock and thats what the olympic test range uses at cecil park in western sydney, it might look bodgy but it works spot on, I am planning on removing the rifle from it's woodwork and clamping the barrel only just like Anschutz does in germany,,,yes they have a close setup to what I made here,,,this way ill test the barrel vibration effect and see if it shoots better,,, I hope,,,I noticed that slower ammo such as eley osp match shoots .250 for the odd group to .350 all day at 50m and as I said before the barrel really rings for each shot, anyway ill keep you guys updated, also sorry to hear that you marked your timber,,,I use pine as it's really soft, in a way I wish I lived out on a farm as I would shoot and test ideas everyday but I guess Ill just have to wait till friday...
