Polystrippa was used to take the finish off - wipe it onto the finish and leave for 5 mins or so and it just softens and bubbles up, and can be scraped off with the blade from a Stanley knife/box cutter.

For the checkering you can use stiff toothbrush with a little Polystrippa on it followed by a clean stiff toothbrush, or if it is the pressed checkering with the flat tops just use the box cutter blade to carefully scrape off the old finish.
