John Holmes gunsmith

No, not the fella of the meat barrelled mutton gun fame.

Twice in the last week or so I have seen the name pop up, one on Saubier with regard to a rifle built by him, and the second time was at a good fellas place I visited the other day, he had a barrel stamped John Holmes on a 17 Rem, I believe.

So the question is has anyone heard of a gunsmith here with that name ?? I have a very vague recollection of hearing the name, and Tamworth rings a bell as to where he worked. I think it was a fair few years ago, so some of you older fellas may have heard of him.

I have a worn out stainless .223 barrel with John Holmes stamped on it. Was 'Tanta gunsmith' something to do with him?

That was John Neville who was Tanta . He died a few years ago.

I asked over on AHN as well, so far I have had one answer, that yes he did work out of Tamworth. Will wait for a bit more info, I spose that its a different bloke to the one in USA, but find it curious that there were two steel gunsmiths and one flesh that had the same name.

Nothing wrong with my memory mate, just had two blokes on two forums confirm he worked in Tamworth and has since retired.

As for the boat, I think they turned it into the Adler factory

Yeah, but not either of the two I am asking about, he was famous for his mutton gunsmithing, not the metal gunsmithing.

as one of the really really old fellas I'm gonna find out , for sure. Watch this space. Anyone that produces barrels that put 5 .17 projectiles in to a ragged hole at 100 yards needs to be recognised.Enquiries will continue.

I don't know if he also worked the trigger on the L461 .223 that the worn barrel was on, but if he did he knew his stuff. The trigger pull was so light I actually dialled it up a bit so it didn't catch me by surprise. It was still still safe though with no slam fires, and the safety still worked.

is does happen, there is a David Kerr in Victoria and another in WA both exceptional gunsmiths. Only DK in WA is still practicing.

not breaking news but John did operate in the Tamworth area , I believe in Peel St Tamworth from the back of his house I'm told. He would be in his late 60's now , from what I understand he's fully retired.

Dave Kerr in WA only does local stuff now and preferably target type stuff
