He he no really

Do not use to coarse a grit paper as it is a lot easier to remove wood than try and put it back on.

Take your time sand with the grain not across it.

Do not use a sanding block as this will introduce flats on the timber that you will see in your finish.

Do not use steel wool as the bloody stuff breaks of leaving slithers of steel imbedded in the timber.
These you will find after you have finished and you are admiring your handiwork.

I would suggest a very light rub with 400 grit dry mainly just to remove any remaining tool marks.

What sort of finish do you want ?

Poly
Varnish
Hack spit groan Truoil (a misnomer as it has very little oil in its ingredients)
Linseed Oil
Boiled Linseed ,This is Linseed Oil with driers(Varnish) added as natural Linseed never fully dries
Shellac ala French Polish
Or a Natural Oil finish such as Tung or Walnut.

A custom stock like that one really is crying out for a hand rubbed oil finish, with lots of flannelette of course.

i watched one of those ultimate factories programs today,on the bentley.
the timber they use on the veneer is the root ball of the tree,
how damn fine is that to look at,all polished up.
the pattern is amazing and the finish was just out of this world.
a stock done like that even a [cough, cough, splutter] laminate,i would be envious of.
i think it was maple or walnut, not sure now.
absolutely mind blowingly purdy timber......
look just how nice that is.

Haha cheers Missed, the haircut is where I have been going wrong then.

The old man and I were discussing boiled linseed, but if you had a suggestion as to something different, I am all ears.

I will have to find out what type of timber it was as the original blank we wanted couldn't be used for some reason.
