50 Alaskan stuff

Post by Buffy »

Hey guys, I have a mate with a spare 8x52 Siamese Mauser. I'm in the need for info .

1. Which barrel manufacturer in oz makes a heavy sporter weight barrel in 50cal?
2. Does anyone know a smith with a 50 Alaskan reamer?
3. Does Geoff Slee still make stocks? If not who would you recommend to make an exhibition grade walnut stock inletted for the Mauser?
4. Are 50cal hunting projies hard to get hold of?

sorry for all the questions, but it's a necessary evil as this could possibly become my first custom build and Xmas prezzy.

Cheers

1. TSE and Sprinter.
2. Start your search in Sydney, but TSE may have one.
3. Passed away.
4. Yes, 440gr $90/100. Then there's Woodleigh.

Cheers...

Thanks for the info so far guys. Sad to hear that Geoff Slee passed away, last time I heard he was wanting someone to teach his skills to.

Con, Can you see this being a money pit that won't be worth the effort? What's the deal with the No.1? easier, cheaper??

I have a 50cal TSE barrel on my Ruger No. 1, which is chambered in 500NE.

No clue on the reamer, but for big bore stuff, Smiths I'd be talking to are Tony Small (He built my 500NE), Jim Kent (Built my 416) and Bob de Vries (Seen a few guns built by him at the Big Game Rifle Club). I'm no expert on Mausers, but I bet getting the thing to feed well will be a bitch so allow for a lot of hours!!

I believe both Tony and Bob will do stocks, plus there is also Ken Davis over here in Perth who I've used a fair bit.

Projectiles is easy - Bertram or Woodleigh. Forget getting any 50cal stuff out of the States.

Oh, just seen the parent case is a rimmed round - I'm with Con, build it on a No. 1!!

I believe gunsmith Gordon Cusens from Tassie bought Geoff Slee's pantograph and patterns, and might be worth giving him a call 0401 442 768, or gcusens@hotmail.com

BB,
I too have thought of a custom mauser 98,
To be honest it is cheaper to restock a factory rifle, than spend the 1000's of dollars making a custom.
It is bloody expensive, my full custom rifle would have cost me over $6000 in the end, and it was a .375 Holland mag.

Just my thoughts mate,
If you truly want a Custom, then the price will scare but not stop you.

Money pit alright, and on an action that few value. I asked one of the better gunsmiths once the rough cost to convert an M98 to handle the rimmed 400/350NE ... even with an original Rigby in the shop to compare, there was close to $3000 in metalwork from go to whoa.

By the time you add all that up, either have a lie down until the thoughts go away, buy a new CZ in 500Jeffery or 505Gibbs, or really cheap is to buy a 416Rigby and convert to 500ASquare. best way to a 50Alaskan is a Ruger No1 ... simple and no action work for feeding required.
Cheers...
