Rebarrelling an Anschutz centre fire

I have found an Anschutz 1432 .22 hornet that I might be able to pick up cheap - currently has $450 on it, but I might be able to knock it down some.

It has the basic beech stock which has been knocked around quite a bit, but that's easy to fix. The match 54 action and magazine are in very good order, and the trigger is sensational. The barrel has some external surface rust, but unfortunately it has some pitting in the base of the bore just ahead of the chamber.

I have a Match 54 action Anschutz .222 that is fabulously accurate despite some minor pitting in the barrel, so I am keen to see if this rifle can be rejuvenated.

I have tried some factory 45gn Highland soft points that showed some promise, but results were variable. Some reloads I already has made up with 40gn 22 mag HP projectiles were ordinary.

Rebarrelling to .17 Hornady hornet might be an option, but I am not sure how rebarrelling of these actions is done. I understand that the barrel is shrink fitted into the action ( action heated and barrel shank inserted) before the barrel is pinned into the action.

How easy is it to re barrel these actions? Is it a job most competent gunsmiths would be able to undertake, or does it need specialist experience?

Onto the topic now, I was under the impression that they screwed their centerfire barrels, and only pinned the rimfires, nevermind, I imagine that any competent gunsmith should be able to do the job for you. go for the little 17 if you don't have one, the 222 is just a better all round package than the hornet, not that Ive anything against hornets, 222 just does it better brass wise.

Yeah, the predictive text function can be a curse if you don't keep your eye on it. Fixed up the title now.

Agree on the .222 being a great little cartridge - I have two .222s in the safe already. I thought a .17 HH would fill a niche between my .17 HMR and the .222. It might even replace the .17HMR.

I have added a few photos. The K8 Weaver scope and .22 rings are mine put on there to test accuracy.

The barrel is a shrink fit and pinned but as Camel said a good gunsmith would not have problem rebarreling it to 17 hornet but if you listen to Camel or Johno you would probably be looking a 19 Johnson Badger.

It's a great little round (17 HH thatbis)that fills the gap-very well, maybe to the point like me where the HMR has not seen action of late.

Did you sell the Annie to buy the ZKW465 hornet? Or did it have some habits that you didn't want the rest of the family to catch?
