As you may have found out in my last thread im starting to reload.

The cartridges i will be reloading for a 223 and 30/06

I've look at the ADI manuals online and it list AR2206H for both the 223 and the 06. Does anyone have experience with this powder in either cartridge? How did it go? Can i get away with the one powder for both?

Thanks

its on the slower side for 223, probably best with 55gn pils. I tried it with 50gns and compared to bm2. My best accuracy loads (I won an informal 100m comp with it) was with BM2.

Dont compromise to save the cost of a tin of powder, you may as well stick with buying budget brand factory ammo.

aim2,
by all means have a crack at 2206H in your 30-06, but I'd suggest that 2209 will be the best powder for that cartridge, just as I've found 2208 seems best in the 308 win family of cartridges for most projectile weights. While it may seem economical to have just one powder, you may not get the accuracy/velocity results you are after!

2206H has worked very well in my .223 using both 50 and 55gr pills. However, I'd stay away from using it in the 30/06. 2209 is slower and better suited for the 06. If you must use 2206H in the 30/06, it'd be better to use it with lighter pills I'd say.

definately try it out. 2206h seems to be a very versitile powder but you may find better results with other powders.

2208 is the best so far for my 308 using 155gr bullets. i found 2209 worked better in my 243 with 87gr bullets. 2206h works best in my 17rem with 20-25gr bullets and 204 with 39-40gr bullets but the also 204 loves bmk2 with 32gr bullets. bmk1 with 50gr bullets are hot shit in my 222. the 223 gets 2207 cos of short barrel and powerfactor (IPSC) i was loading for a mate 223 and it took bmk2 with 55gr bullets and we loaded 2206h for 60gr bullets. 17fireball will get the 2207 powder.

i've tried 2206h with all of the above.

lots of useless info here but just an example that one powder may not suit both cartridge/rifle combos you have. at only $45 a tin why not try others.

Thanks andrew for that.

It seems to be a very versatile powder, i guess its just trial and error

if you look at the manual you will see one powder that delivers the highest velocity for the max charge with the pill you want to use. Now its only a rule of thumb but I have always started load development for any combo with that powder. Its worked so far.

Sounds like a plan, thanks!

I'll add that if you look at the heaviest vs the lightest bullets, generally you'll see that the faster powder gives the best velocity with the lightest bullets and vice versa. If your rifle barrel has the "standard" twist for the cartridge, pick the bullet weight from the middle of the range as your starting point..
Comparing from the ADI website, BM2 or 2206H would be good for the .223 with bullets 50-55gns
and 2209 would be good in the 30-06 with upper half of the bullet weight range.
There's plenty of variables involved, the rifle will tell you what it likes best.

i'll second what trevort say's. i've done the same and found that a powder that fills a case more has a better velocity spread aswell and has been typically more accurate then a powder that burns faster. usually the powder that is the first to be slightly compressed or just before that for the bullet weight.

Thanks for all the info guys, really appreciate it.

Sam- i think i'll be shooting 55 grainers out of it, what style of bullet, i don't know yet.

For the 30/06 - i don't go after pigs and goats very often, (not interested in deer) plus the gun is an older mauser, and i want to be able to run cast plinking loads out of it. I've found a source of cheap cast pills, and i've already e-mailed ADI and they have given me a light loads which required trail boss. But i've heard loading cast pills is a whole different story.

For totally useless information, 2206H is sold as H4895 powders in the US. It was developed as competition for IMR-4895. That's not much, but think of this........

IMR-4895 was the powder used by the US military for .30/06 ammo in WWII and Korea, used mostly with the 147gr. FMJ ammo (M2 ball).

I'd have to say that it's a perfect choice for the .30/06 cartridge, based on that. Hell, it's government approved!

It works great with the heavier .223 bullets, too, especially 69gr. Sierra Matchkings.

Your assuming the approval of a government is a good thing?

I use BM2 in my 223 with 50 gr and 2208 in my 30-06 with 125gr.

I've found the following with AR 2206H.

.223 Rem in two rifles Sako Vixen and Ruger Predator - it's the propellent that provides most consistent accuracy with 55gn pills of all sorts with a neat 25gn charge.

.30-06 in an M17 in military config and a Sauer .202 Classic, they both really like the same sub-max load of AR 2206H behind 125gn TNTs - load 52.3gn, from memory.
