well not quite but having a primer go off while hammering away at dismantling 243 ammo was enough to near solid my pants. i felt bits hit my face and arms, wasn't wearing safety glasses which i always have while hand loading ammunition. thank my lucky stars that the 45 odd grains of 2209 didn't go with it.

so probably a good time to remind all that we need our eyes to see what we are shooting at.

sure was! the bullet was still firmly seated, hadn't budged. i think it was caused by a primer seated too tight. took about 3 hits to set it off. i pulled another 35 without incident. wore safety glasses

Shit, lucky the payload didn't go off.

Eye injuries are no fun - even a little speck of metal or sand etc stuck in your eye means a powerful light shining in your eye, with some joker picking it out with a needle. Been there, done that - not pleasant!

That is a mystery..................................got me rooted as to why the powder wasnt ignited.

About twenty years ago I cracked a stockwhip in my right eye shit that was painful, it was like looking through 5 layers of glad wrap for a week and frighten the shit out of me. That being said I never learn though, cause I just had a disk blow up while I was cutting a hole in the wall to put a sliding door in.

Mate that’s a mongrel! I must admit I’ve probably pulled over 1000 rounds over the years with a hammer and never had this happen once, have I just been lucky ! just a few questions?
1) has any one else ever experienced this before
2) what would cause it to go off
3) why didn’t the powder go with it

Yeah I bet that was fun. I am on my third kenetic hammer, just keep busting them. It's awkward when I have to go next door to collect the bits that fly off.

Christ you were lucky---- I'm onto my 2nd hammer, with no incidents--- except, I was poping pills--I mean I was extracting projectiles, when a bang occurred. I think what happened was --during the inertia pulling I must of lost the odd grain of powder on the concrete floor. While I was banging away----I mean hammering away, I can only assume that some of the powder must ignited.
I have no other explanation and no primer went off.
The only other handloading "incident" I've personally heard about, is when a young pro kangaroo shooter, in Queensland, in his words, "accidently dropped a primer into a 240 Weatherby case full of powder". He didn't shoot a lot of 'roos that night after that particular round went off . In fact, it took several days for his vision to restore and then he had to accuire another rifle.
Statistics tell us that shooting is still a very safe sport-- even though we all handle gunpowder and primers.

Thats it!!! Its the pliers and the press with the die removed from now on for me. I never did like the idea of flogging shit out of a plastic hammer on a concrete floor with a live round inserted. Jeez, imagine what might the outcome have been if the whole lot had gone off. You,re a lucky man

i tried the pliers after but of course it stuffs the bullet. i'm a tight arse these days. also i think your meant to hit a block of wood. i can't use it for small cal cases anymore cos the collet let go on a 204 case and the whole round went inside the hammer. guess where the bullet ended up... inside the case with the powder.
