cases trimmed too short!

Hi troops,
up at my mate's station doing some shootin', & helping with his reloading.
He had a problem with his 257 roberts not chambering, so I got him set up for trimming as the necks were getting a bit long, and I arrived this trip with a wilson case gage for him to find that his nephew had trimmed between 2-4mm shorter than 57mm. Are these cases still useable, or should they be binned? would a short trimmed case result in throat erosion? what would be the consequence of using these cases.
Thanks, FB

2-4 mm?
Personally i would bin them and start from scratch. Never used the chambering but i cant see it being a good thing having them so short a sfare thing. the neck i cant see being longer then 10MM so in some cases they are 40% too short.

Sinclairs sells cerrosafe so you can make a cast of your chamber and measure exactly how long your cases can be and still be safe. Why?
The more of your projie supported by the case before it engages in the barrel the better. More concentricity, less unsupported distance to allow a wobble in the projie etc etc. So your 'too short cases' defeat the purpose of reloading for accuracy.
How anal do you want to be? how much will that piss you off?
If you have enough neck to hold the projie steady and you try a few and things die, well there shouldnt be a safety issue.

I suppose as long as the shoulder is correct if the neck is a little short its only less holding the projectile.

I would say bin them but........The instructions with my Lyman trimmer say 1-2mm short is fine

.If you buy some 7x57 mauser cases and form to 257 Roberts you will have nice long thick necks you will be able to trim and turn to you Hearts content
