Opinions on pbest powder and load for 150gn .308W 26in barre
Opinions on pbest powder and load for 150gn .308W 26in barre
I recently asked about the best loads for the .270W and got excellent info from people on this site.
Am about to buy 1000 Gold Medal Federal primers to use in the .308W and the .270W and to use AR2209 as suggested in the .270.
According to Nick Harvey's manual Ar2208 is as good as any in the .308W, anyone had experience with the AR2208 with 150gn projectiles in the .308W ????

Hi wilddog,2208 will be good in the 308 driving 150 grainers.Work up his from his recommendations. I run 45gr of 2208 behind my 155gr F class target loads.I used 2208 for awhile for 150grain hunting loads but switched to BM2 and got better accuracy in my rifle.
What projectile and use?
Have a good one,
Macca

Mate I run 44.5 grns of 2208 behind 150 BT`s.I was using 748 but had a Temperature experience. Was also using RL7 but have decided to keep my last tins for the 222.

The 748 spiked I take it?
How was the RL7?Did it burn clean or leave a heap of powder residue?
cheers,

It is a bit embarassing mate I think it was more my fault
I still have a few tins left as well
.I found RL7 to burn reasonably clean and it gave good field performance with limited load developement.2208 is in my opinion an easier powder to use with a more progressive pressure rise.

As for the use of the.308, anything feral that's in a legal position to be taken, otherwise punching paper at the range.

Big E,
Your recommendation of 50.5gr 2208 for a 150gr projectiles is WAY over max! Please exercise caution handing out loads on the net, someone could get hurt or worse.
ADI lists 47gr as the max (compressed) load for the 150gr projectiles when using 2208. Also your velocities are very slow if you are using that amount of powder, what bbl length are you running? Also hard to believe you increase the charge from 47-50.5 and only gain 19fps??

Thank you all for your input.
Don't worry Big E I wouldn't be exceeding the max in the manuals, I was mainly inquiring about whether 2208 was the preferred powder and whereabouts between the starting and maximum loads the shooters on this site had success. Apparently it is.
I'm new to reloading and would rather get a few opinions on the critical aspects of it.

Most F class standard shooters, run between 46-46.5 gns of 2208 to get to the 2950 fps barrel node with 30" barrels and 155gn pill. These blokes fire thousands of rounds with this load and have done lots of load work up to get best accuraccy. With a 26" barrel, the node would be closer to 2910-2930 fps, so would take around 45.5 gns with 150gn bullet, with no pressure, easy to extract cases.

I'm running 46.5 of 2208 behind the 155 dyer with no pressure signs. Check out the ADI website for their powder and load recommendations and work from there.

Re: Opinions on pbest powder and load for 150gn .308W 26in barre
G'day Wild dog,
I have used Bench Mark II, 2207, 2208, 2209 & 2217 in numerous calibers, however, if you dont mind experimenting with imported powder I would recommend Vihta Vuori N 150 and it's no more expensive then ADI.
I run 45.5 grns with a 155 grn projectile and receive consistent muzzle velocities with a variation of between 5-8fps and I am using 'Federal' brass.
At a 100 yards it places each shot through the one hole and at 200 it's sub-moa. My best group to date at 600 yards is 2.632 with an average velocity 2810 fps. These velocities are higher then what is listed in the reloading manual and for having used less powder.
This is due to the warmer climate that we have here in Australia.
For a 150 grn projectile I would start with a load around the 45 grn mark and then gradually work up in half grain increments.
I have also begun developing a load for the .338 Winchester Magnum utilising a double based powder manufactured by Vihta Vuori which can also be used in the .308.
Don't be afraid to step outside the square.
Regards
Sean
