308 for varminting
308 for varminting
hi all! new to this game with reloading as ive only had rimfires before. just bought myself a browning a-bolt, 308. i would be looking at taking this out with me when hunting the smaller feral to get the longer range and to have a bit of fun. the question ive got is has anyone had any experience reloading the smaller 100-110 grain pils in there bullets? if so what loads are u making? what kind of trajectory and distance are u getting? any suggestings would be great!
If you use the 125s or 130s, instead of the 110s, you can almost duplicate the trajectory of the .270 Winchester, which is no slouch in the flat shooting department. The ballistics coefficient is much better with those bullets. I'd try them with Winchester 748 or (remember I'm in the US) H-4895, Varget, or similar powder (check the ADI website for conversion to your powder names). I can't give a specific load, since it's been too long since I last owned a .308.
I can't specifically comment on 308W but in my 300WM the 125TNT and 130gr speer hp are brilliant for varminting. The speer does a bigger blow up for me but thats probably because I can't drive the TNT fast enough, it comes apart before I reach top velocity. I drive the speer at 3750 fps and it's awesome, but I think the TNT out of a 308 would be ideal. If you were going to try 110's, the Vmax would be the go. It blows up out the barrel real early in a 300wm. (just ask my buggered dead chrony). Would be a good medium range varmint destroyer in a 308. Don't bother with the Ballistic tips there're all the hunting type not varmint in 308 cal.

a bloke I really respect for his loading accumen let me shoot his wonderfull semi custom Sako 579 .308 one day at little river.
he had loaded up some 110 V-max
They worked very well on target even for a 2 bit hack like me.
easy as anything on the shoulder and I was hitting clayts at 250 plus after a few rounds.
I plan to use 125 TNT's in my 30 BR when it's built and maybe 135 Bergers but they might be a bit heavy.
With all the great auusie projectile makers I'm sure we can find you one who's be willing to make you a LD HPFB or a VLD HPBT in the 110-125 grain range
That should give you velocity potential of 3250+ as a min
using the 125 Ballistic tip @ 3300 FPS with a 2.5 inch PBR sight in you are +2.0@100 (+2500ftlbs energy) zero @ 260 and about 8 inches low at 360 with +1500 ftlbs.
I picked the 125 NBT from my ballistics program becasue it's common and has a high listed BC .
I picked the velocity I did because I know a bloke who has done 3200 fps with a 30 BR and the 125's so the 308 should be able to do a bit more easily with mild pressure and good case life.

BTW I was trying to scrape together the $$ to buy that 308 but I just couldnt do it in time before one of KJD's mates got it.
I recon if I could have gotten this particular 308 I would have been set and would have considered buying any larger cals until the 416 Taylor project that i have been working on for years.- but thats another story.
