Another 45-70 govt question ?????

Post by HAIR BEAR »

G'day all
How you lot all going ???
Well i got my 45-70 in a marlin lever and brought a packet of remington ammo
Now the rem stuff according to their web page , 405 grn slug doing around 1300 fps
This stuff is real nice and easy to shoot !
Now my reloads are loaded with 405 woodlieghs
i tried two types of powder AR2206h and AR2207
The AR2206h was loaded at 51grns and according to nick harveys book should be around the 1600 fps
The AR2207 was loaded at 47 grns and according to nick harveys book should be around the 1800 fps
Now the 2206h was not to bad to shoot ,kick yes but in control
The 2207 well lets say i would be more accurate if i threw the gun at the target !
Now i am thinking about getting the muzzle velocity to run at around the 1400-1500 fps for comfort and enjoyment
I had a look at nicks data for the older springfield 45-70s he reccomends max load for the older type rifles
with 2207 is 30grns for 1200 fps but starting loads for the marlins in same powder is 46grns
Is/would it be safe for me to drop powder charge to some where in between 30grns-46grns ?????
eg
max load for old springfield in AR2207 is 30 grn (1200 fps)
start load for marlin in AR2207 is 46 grn (1800fps)
what i would like is some where in between say 38grn of 2207 for 1500fps

Thank folks
Andree

My 45/70 Marlin likes 2207. 54gr with a 300gr JHP and i can get 2" 3 shot groups @ 200m on a good day

Pick your starting load with AR2207, start reducing until you hit the velocity you desire. The 45/70 has 3 reloading levels, a stronger action will take the reduced loads easily. If you drop too far down with AR2207 however, you start getting combustion issues (unburnt powder) so it may pay to use a magnum primer. You might also look at running another powder, like Alliant's 2400.
Cheers...

Thanks Con
thats what i was thinking ,
only want to drop around 300-400 fps to get the comfort zone in shooting it !
i like to see the projectile strike the target
Thanks

Hey Keith
Mate i look in every now and then !!!
Family and work took over there for a while !
Now i have a bit of time up my sleeve ,and starting to get back into my hobbies
Was starting to get a bit worried as i used to spend alot of spare time on "puter"
and needed to just do the stuff ,instead of reading about every one else doing it !
But i feel i have it under control for now :D
On another note , mate you have done a wonderful job here !
Every time i look, it just seems better
WELL DONE and THANKS
