Hi all,

Ive been reading the forums for ages now and its about time i interacted with all you experts out there.
Tomorrow im off to the range with my .22 mag. (old lever action Winchester 9422) and i will just be doing a bit of sighting in. I know its not the most accurate rimfire but its all i can take and im waiting on my PTA for a model 2 Brno i just paid for.

My question to you is what is the average trajectory of this particular cartridge? Should i sight it in at 90 meters? Once i have the Brno cracking i will set that up for 50m but i was thinking that because the magnum is capable of slightly longer range it would be better to zero at 90m. Would that be a good idea? It wont be going to the range again once i have other rifles so it will only ever be used for fox hunting out to a maximum of 100 meters or so. I plan on getting a .223 varmint rifle next for longer range small game hunting and longer shots at the range.

how long does this cartridge shoot flat for before it begins to loose speed and drop off? I iwll be testing an old box of Winchester Power Point and i just picked up a box of nice looking Fiocchi .22 Win. Mag. both are 40gr hp

Mate, I don't know how a lever action will go but depending on the ammo I have seen bolt actions take rabbits fromm 100 to 150 yards.
The 40 gr ammo will be doing 2000 to 2300fps depending on brand so it has the legs.
Try at 90/100 and see if you get a group your happy with.
A lot depends on wether you will be taking your shots at that range when hunting.But if your sighted in at the longer range 90 instead of 50 you won't have to worry guessing if a long shot comes up.

Yeah i will use the .22lr for most shots under that range and only bring out the lever .22wmr if a slightly bigger challenge presents itself. It will be interesting to see what grouping i get tomorrow. Il post up my findings.

G'day CJ, what macca said is all good, and I recently saw that Hornady has released a 33gn V-max load for the .22WMR and I belive it shoots a bit flatter, their not cheap though.
Also, I dont know how well power points shoot in a lever gun, but from my experience and a lot of others, they aren't great performers in the grouping department.

Yeah i closely examined the old power points last night and all the tips of the hollow points are all slightly different and inconsistant. I think i will only let a few of them go and shoot with the Fiocchi. They look heaps better and are all exactly he same as each other. I will post up my findings between the two tonight.

I sight my 22mag for 90 meters.

To give you a rough idea go to your ammo makers website, and find the bullet you have and it should give you a rough idead of the trajectory.

AJ once you're sighted in at 90m , move the target & shoot it at 60m & 30m & then out at 120m without adjusting your elevation. This will give an idea of trajectory from your rifle & you can work out how much hold over or under you need at various ranges, it also shows if your scope is on straight!
I use cheap ammo(pmc & highland) it may not group as well as the expensive stuff but anything rabbit sized or bigger is not safe at 100m
