308 Winchester Powder choice.

Hi All

Will be soon reloading for 308 for FStandard/Fullbore and was wandering what powder is best for the 308. 2206H, 2206 or 2208. Will be using the 155's of course as well just wandering on what others are using/ find is best, or should I be loading up and trying them all?

Rifle is an Omark with I think 30inch stainless barrel (can't remember exactly) and using as it to get started in target shooting.

Cheers
Ryan

Hi, I was using 46grains of 2208 with 150 nosler 150gr BT's grouping under 1in at 100 paces
Just for something different, I tried 42 grains of BM2 loa to just fit in the mag of the T3 and
the grouping was a tight clover leaf for the same distance , so thats the load for now :D

Hi stinkitup, probably loading both 2206h and 2208 then doing a series of load comparisons would be best.2206 is to be, or already is, discontinued.
Unfortunately BM2(which my omark loves is not legal for F standard.
80% of fullbore and F standard shooters at my club use 2206H/2206. It seems to give the best loads at all ranges.
Which breed of projectile are you using?
Have a good one,
Macca

Hi Stinkitup
For Fstandard using 155 BJD projectiles in a 30" barrell use cci br2 primer and 2208 powder. 2206H is too hot at the top end. Aim for about 2970 fps. You will need obout 45.8 gns of powder. Seat at or just into the lands. Iam using this load in my Barnard with 30" 13 twist Kreiger. It has not let me down at 2 Queens so far this year.

Thanks Guys

Yes if BM2 was legal I would be giving it a go. I have read that 2206H can give be a little inconsistent with temp changes etc but then others seem to love it so might just have to give it a try and try the 2208. Seems though 2208 is very common and most say very consistent so will see.

Was going to Load with Lapua Cases, CCi br2 primers and try both the smk and the dyer to see which one she prefers. I know alot of guys use winnie brass and it usually has slightly more capacity, anyone else found this or experience?

Anyway thanks again for the replies.

Ryan

Hi Stinkitup
Lapua cases O/K for standard loads. Win cases only needed if you go to Match Rifle and need the extra capacity for the 200 gn + projectiles.

Robin is right on the money
i use lapua brass for comps and win for practice. either 45.7 or 45.8 is the best, the victorian rifle team did tests and found that .8 with best, and either seating 10thou into the lands or 30 thou out, the 155gr seirra like a bit of a jump, i tryed 50-60 thou jumps but not as succesful as the 30.
and i also use a 1-13 rate twixt krieger in my mellinium action
hope this helps

G'day,

I got these quotes from another forum. It does relate to F/Class shooting with SMK's, but take from it what you will.

"A little info I reload my sons 308 with 43.5 gns 2206H he uses it back to 800m with 155 gn SMK's. In a 24 inch barrel it's easy on the shoulder & accurate, he shoots F/Standard with scores in the mid 50's at 800m, it's even better at 600m, hope this helps.
Cheers
Peter T"

AND

"I 2nd the 2206H as well. It gets about the same velocity as 2208 but more consistent speeds, cleaner as well.
I have tried to load as much 2209 as I could into a case, but the velocity is too low. No go with 2209"

So 2206H seems to be the most popular. Then 2208. And just in case you were thinking 2209, apparently it's a no go with the 150ish sized projectiles.

Luck

Well I use 2208 in the ole 308. I have found that using 46grns of 2208 with either a Lapua 155 (yes I know its not legal) or a 155SMK works rather well and recently produced consistant groups under between 1 & 2 inches at 300m and 6.5 & 8 inch groups at 1000yds .. that'll do me.

cheers
Rinso

ps have shot possibles at F class with the SMK's at 300,500,600 this year & dropped no more than 3 points at a range this year using left overs from Long Range BR.

Hi Guys,

Pardon my complete ignorance and a slight hijack but...
Why, where, how, is BM2 illegal in F standard? Not that i'm planning on using it, but I just wasn't aware of such rules... I ask cause I'm planning on getting a 308 shortly for the comps that don't shoot F open.

Sounds like I need to find a rule book...

muz,

You can only use
2206,2206H & 2208 powder & 155 SMK & BJD(Dyer) projectiles in 308 rifles in F Class Standard. Brass and primers are not restricted however moly coating is allowed ???? go figure.
Other little fun things include trigger weight no less than 1kg.
The SSR's can be found on the NSWRA web site.

cheers
