stoopid question
Tried on another international shooting forum but didnt get a reply the jumped out and smacked me in the face.
Is the CT ballistic silver tip a varmint bullet or a hunting bullet? Got a mate who shoots pigs with them (not talking huge boars) Would the 55gr silvertips be any different to a 55gr vmax in penetration and expansion?

Just like the Nosler Ballistic Tip, the CT bullet can be either, depending on calibre and bullet weight. Pretty sure that all of the .22 calibre bullets are varmint types. Winchester website has an ammunition list which lists all the bullets and the 'CXP type' of ammunition.

Thats not correct mate Nosler BT's come in both varmint and hunting types
Varmint types go from .20 cal to .25 cal
Hunting BT types go from 6mm to 8mm so there is some substantial cross over! the 20 or 22 cal does not have any hunting Ballistic tips.

sorry guys yep 22 cal 55gr. The 55gr vmax dont really blow up on the bunnies they tend to make an enlarged exit hole. If there was another bunny behind the one I shot, it would be dead too. If I was shooting lighter bullets I would expect them to blow up, but I made these loads heavier to carry oomph at longer ranges so i reckon they penetrate a bit more than the lighter ones. My TNT's are blowing up a tad more but I will use the hornady stuff up before staying with the cheaper TNT bullets.
I might just get some highland or remington soft points to use for pigs. Im not talking big buggers, nothing over 60kg i reckon. Those bloody barnes tsx are over a dollar a pop here so Im not going to even bother with them.

Well, it may be just semantics, as the Vmax do make a huge exit hole, but, they have, nevertheless, blown up. On many occasions I've tried for two rabbits from one shot, and whilst it does happen sometimes, very often the second rabbit is killed by either part of a bullet, or part of his mate.Brad Y wrote:sorry guys yep 22 cal 55gr. Agree with jb747 that v-max's do blow up. Tried for two rabbits with one shot yesterday morning with the 17Rem shooting 25gr v-max's. Waited till both bunnys were in line, hit the 1st one mid chest and the second one bolted. On inspection the hit rabbit was split open, bent in half and nearly all its chest/gut contents were spread beside it.
Had very similar results with the 223 as well

Used the 55gr GameKing on goats and found these were better than 55gr Nosler BT's with a well placed shotBrad Y wrote:hmm, I was thining blowing up was more like the TNT. I can see now that a heap of fragmented bullet could easily make a large exit hole.
Ive had a good look for hunting bullets and I might go with the soft point sierra 55gr game king instead for pigs and goats
