@220
In your experience with the 45/70 what pill/powder combo would you suggest for Sambar?
I am currently thinking a Blackwidow 350gn Round Nose Flat Point Bevel Base, over 2207.
Or a 405gn RNFP Beval Base with again 2207 (as its on hand, though also have 2208).
https://blackwidowprojectiles.com.au/pr ... -base-458/
Now, Nick Harvey's load data book doesnt mention cast Vs jacketed pills. Just the 3 different rifle types for action strength.
Sooo long story short, how does cast perform with jacketed projectile load data?
I am "assuming/presuming" that cast would have lower pressures than jacketed, therefore a slightly higher charge weight would be required for equal velocity?

Having completely no experience in the area, I feel compelled to reply.
Don’t you have to use lower powder charge/pressure on cast pills so they don’t become streaks in your barrel?

Just remember to keep the Blackwidow pill lower then 2000fps or you could get lots of leading. Don't know if you can put a gas check on them or not.

Isnt the idea of powder coated pills - so that you can punch them out a bit faster?
Noting that I will probably only be "aiming for" 1800 (ish) fps - accuracy dependant.

There are different coatings and they all different speed ratings. Most of the time you wont push a coated lead projie past 2000, if you need to you need a gas check

Blackwidow state 2000fps so 1800 will be good.

For awhile I ran a 420gr hard cast at 1780fps, then backed it off to 1650fps so the gun (Marlin 45/70) was manageable. If cast hard, they will sail through broadside with ease.

I use 07 with my lighter 330gr bullets but they are a lighter plinking load only around 1300fps. Quite accurate and 1" groups are the norm at 50 so head shots on rabbits. Still more velocity than I got with BP loads with the same pill and I shot a few fallow with them.
Couple of sambar I have shot with mine were my 370gr HP, it is a 405gr pill without the HP, running them with 08 at around 1600fps. Side on shots through the lungs of sambar isnt enough to stop them or smaller pigs with texas heart shots. I cast them fairly soft at around 11/12BHN and ties with the little bit of experimenting into water jugs where i was getting about 80cm penetration.
I would probably go with the 405 just for the added weight and the fact both being cast means you will be limited to similar velocity. 07 or 08 see where the best accuracy lies.
Have another one to try now, mitches 44mag, 310gr doing 1500fps, I dont think penetration will be a issue with it.
