Ladder test new barrel

Post by Brad Y »

223 tikka now wearing a 12 twist Krieger heavy Palma 26 inches with a zero free bore chamber and sporting a spiffy quattromax muzzle brake. First bullet tried was the 40gr varmageddon tipped in Lapua case with federal gold medal spark plug. Did an initial work up on a wet windy arvo to see how far up it could go with 8208 before pressure. I stopped before pressure stopped me so figured go back to 100 on a better day and see how well it went. 26.7, 26.8, 26.9 and 27 all went into this. Load found at 26.9 and it’s the same as watching holes appear in a target shooting a 22, with the noise level of a 22-250. Will run it through the chrony soon. Can’t wait to start watching the pink mist

It would seem you have found that rifles load. Nice.

Nice shooting Brad, and as Marcus said your rifle has found its preferred load - have you chrony'd any of yet?
Not that velocity makes accuracy, just out of interest.

No chrony work yet. Judging by what components adi used to test loads, somewhere over 3700 is my guess but the barrel is only 41 rounds old

This muzzle brake business is getting to me. Think the 260 ai might get one

Trev I can recommend the quattromax. Made in Unzud. I’m not a fan of the tactical style clamshell ones.

Not sure what brake I have as it came with the rifle. However it works well.

Very noticeable difference the few times I shot without it.

It does create a bit of a side blast which some observers aren’t a fan of.

I fired a couple of shots with whiskey wombats new 6.5 short Sherman on the weekend. Don’t know the brand of brake but 60gns of powder and it recoiled like a benchrest 22. Tiny push straight back. No interruption of the site picture

A braked 223 shooting 40gn pills, now that would have been sweet to shoot. Maybe like a17Rem

Trev, thats what is on the 6SLR and will suit the 260AI as well.
