Reckon a Sierra 150gn Pro hunter would be a good choice for reds, or maybe one of the lighter Barnes TSX, they aren't that big an animal, Sambar I would probably look at something in the 180gn range, one of the Woodleigh selection would be good. Hornady interlock were a good hunting bullet as well, if you can find any these dyas.

Any decently constructed non varmint bullet will do the job - if you put it in the right place.
Barnes and Woodleighs are great for oblique shots where penetration "may" be questionable.
Neither species are particularly "tough" to kill with well placed shots.

Killed a few with 150 grain Interlocks before I sold the .308. Put it in the right spot and they go down.
Barnes 150 TTSX or TSX would also do the job.

My mate has my old 300 savage, between something like 30 sambar down to 150 gr SST's and they are traveling slower than the 308 win.
Its all about placement mate

Exactly. There is a lot of bullshit about the armour plated sambar. It’s all about placement pure and simplejohno1 wrote:My mate has my old 300 savage, between something like 30 sambar down to 150 gr SST's and they are traveling slower than the 308 win.

Mick and Trev, you pair have shattered my world. I thought you needed a 338 Win Mag and a 250 grain bullet just slow down a Sambar. I'm crushed.

Terrible isn't it Tony, when the humble 30-30 can do the job..... that Soooo many Gunshops INSIST you need a .338WM as a minimum caliber.Tony Z wrote:Mick and Trev, you pair have shattered my world. I thought you needed a 338 Win Mag and a 250 grain bullet just slow down a Sambar. I'm crushed.

I use a B&T Energetics 180g thru the 30/06 and seems to work just fine
I have also poked a couple of 160g accubonds into Fallow which work just fine too.
As per Micks post the 30/30 can be used to good effect on the big brown deer which I used a 150g woody in.
Not that hard to kill, you'll get the occasional dead on their feet runner no matter what you use if you shoot enough
