I finally received my 221 fireball from the US, Bill said he would include dies so the box contained the standard Forster FLS & seater die but also this Redding competition neck die.

Ive never used one of these dies and i'm not sure how to set it up properly being a luddite this fancy stuff is beyond me.
How do I set it up, simple please how do I know what bushing size is being used?

Ive pulled the die down and there is a stainless sleeve stamped 221 rem B neck, is this the bushing?

Appreciate any help

Ahh found a picture of the internals it seems the brass bush is missing, I guess they would come in a set for 22 cal

It wont be a brass bush John, it will either be steel or titanium nitrite coated, they are a brassy colour. Measure the outside diameter of your loaded brass and then subtract 2, 3 or 4 thou and that will give you your bush size, e.g. my 20/222, loaded ammo is .232, so I use a 230 bush. Instructions for setting the die up will either be in the box or you can hit Mr Google = Redding Competition Bush Neck Die.

Thanks Mark, no bushes came with it so I would have to buy what is required, considering the amount of shooting I do hardly worth while i'll just stick with the Forsters

Ignore this johno. Camel is on the money though I usually choose 1 thousand of neck tension. A nitride bushing is around $50

Thanks Trev, I may take it forward but will probably stay with the standard dies, simple stuff for a simple old bloke. Hope to take the rifle out tuesday and see how it shoots. Enjoy your holiday mate

Yeah load your ammo with no prep and if it's tight necked it will not fit, good advice
There is obviously a lot more factors involved ie if you turn or not and your loaded ammo minus 2 thou needs to still fit your chamber

The dies won't change the equation, measure a loaded round, or five if they aren't neck turned, then subtract 1 thou for bench rest use, or 2-3 for hunting use. If a loaded round won't chamber, just from neck diameter, then you will need to neck turn.
If it is just a standard chamber, not a 'match' chamber, you should have no problem.

1 thou neck tension is fine for BR shooting from a bench but for hunting its not enough.

I have had projectiles push into cases in the magazine with 1 thou neck tension, my minimum is 3 thou now.

It will be a standard neck, I believe it is a factory chamber. . John you could always sell that neck bush die to someone who has a 20vt or even one of the 17s made from 22fireball cases

Mark, thats exactly what i'll do I think its just a stock standard CZ 527 221 f.b. and will be used around the farm for rabbits & foxes,

I went back over the old emails Bill sent and he said he was enclosing bench rest seater die, whe I opened the box there was also a broken Redding stem. I think after he suffered the stroke he just got confused on things and has actually tried to seat a bullet with the neck die, anyway he must have got a replacement stem along the line and again forgotten what he had. Its simple to understand why he took the option he did when he could no longer function as he wanted

I will just get a Forster neck die die and sell this fancy micrometer type neck die

I don't know mate, I just checked Sinclairs and they are listed at $140.00 USD That's $197.00 AUD
The aussie bench rest seller is bloody ridiculous.

Save your money and just go with the full length sizer John, bugger all advantage to be gained by neck over full length sizing for what you want it for.

If DSD does'nt put his hand for it just shoot me a pm with a fair offer don't see myself using it and that way I can buy an RCBS bench primer tool
