.300 win mag

Hi Ausvarminters it’s been a while.
Got a 26” barrel 1-10 twist Remington 700 LR what would be a good starting point for a bullet weight for this calibre ? It seemed to like Factory Norma 178grs but not so with 178 gr Hornady ELD-X hand loads.
Thoughts ?

Yes, it has been a while, you naughty boy.

Depends on what you are going to shoot with it I spose, I ran some 125gn Nosler BTs through mine to see what it would be like as a varmint gun, shot pretty well, but I have no idea how fast they went, nor have I kilted anything with it yet.

When I went in a camel cull I used 165 gn ssts 180 Nosler accubonds and 180 grand slams. Most camels needed more than one shot to make it quick. The grand slam was the only one to give a bang flop

A 150gn Barnes would do the job.
I like the 168gn Berger Hunting VLD.
Works on everything I have pointed it at so far from Horses to Fallow.

"Generally" a magnum could start at 180gn and go up from there.

I have a mate (yes but one)that has had great success using 208 grain AMax

Placement is very important. That aside I agree with Mick re the Berger hunting vlds. Also the Amax have never failed me. I had success with 168gr ain a standard 308 on camels also water buff. The 300 win just offers a bit more wiggle room.

I have a mate (yes but one)that has had great success using 208 grain AMax

Yeah that's me.

Been using Hornady 208gr A-Max for almost 20 years now on Sambar with get success.

I used the Norma 178gr's factories to get the brass then went back to the 208's.

I use 2217 with a Fed 210 primer .
I get just under 2900fps.

I've shot deer to 500+ yrds with these no problem at all.

Ok so I’m using Norma brass which was 178’s factory and thought that the Hornady ELD-X 178 should be ok however I’ve just noticed that on the bottom of the box they say 1-12 twist

I also went with AR 2213sc however now I’m thinking that it’s a bit too fast .... What was I thinking ?

Recommended twist rate is the minimum that they suggest will stabalise their bullets, it doesnt mean they wont work in faster twist rates.
