Accuracy problem diagnosis

I have a rifle which I think is trying to shoot accurately but something is wrong, the group in the picture is fairly typical of what happens regurlaly. Shots touching but the overall group size is large.

I'm thinking it is either bedding related, which will be fixed when the Grs i have had on order since march arrives. Or the scope or mounts is moving.

I have tried a known good scope (but in the same mounts) and had the same results. I have tried this scope on another rifle and had no issues.

The mounts are burris signature rings with the plastic inserts, all bolts are tight.

Does anyone think it's worth looking into anything else?

Just what is the rifle being used for ? If that group was indicative of accuracy out of my 7-08, 308, 338/06 hunting rifles, I would be very happy indeedy. :D

Hunting rifle or target rifle?

I know a 5 shot group is well err two shots better than a 3 shot group but one of the reasons I stop at a 3 shot group when sighting in (hunting rifles only) is that is easier to shoot and go away feeling pretty confident with things (yes, ignorance can be bliss). Always seems to be one or two that ruin it for me if I push my luck

I'm with Camel on this one except I would have packed it up after the first two and gone hunting :hunting:

Just clutching at straws but if the pattern is formed each time in the same sequence it is as the thing heats up if it is throwing the same pattern but in a random sequence of shots maybe some load variation as if you took the vertical out of it it would be real bloody tidy?

Sorry guys, I should have included a bit more info.

Rifle is my Sako 75 in 6.5x55 with Maddco barrel. As you say, accuracy is hunting level, but I was expecting better and I still think it's capable of more.

The rail is only held on by friction on the tapered dovetail, which I was sceptical of, but it doesn't seem to be moving.

I'm using reloads, 49g 2213sc under a 140g amax. They were the best during load testing, but if something is moving then I may have to repeat the process.

I'm really hoping when I get the new stock and bed it properly it will improve.

I see why you would expect better.

I would be trialing different rail setup. Is it a 1:8 or 1:9 ?

Maybe with the friction rail its affected by heat as well. wouldnt take much.

Have you got any other pills to try? Maybe its those deforming plastic amax tips .
