Shell Holders and Dies
A new set of questions for a newbie reloader....
How compatible are the various brands of reloading gear?
Specifically:
1. Dies (which I think I know the answer two).
2. Shell holders to suit various presses.
3. Shell holders as used for priming tools etc.

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
Dies - pretty much all the major brands will go into each others presses, for example i have a Lyman Crusher single stage press, and use simplex, lee, hornady, rcbs, lyman, redding and forster dies.
Shellholders - same as above.
Handheld priming shellholders - i use a set of lee shellholders that are compatible with most hand priming tools.

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
rcbs hand primer uses press shellholders while lee has holders specific to is priming tool.
Dies and presses are interchangeable except a particular model of simplex (I think) that has a different thread

Agreed! But it's useful to know what's interchangeable, particularly when starting out.MISSED wrote:I try to buy like for like with the dies and shell holders ie Redding die and a redding shell holder.

All of the above, with particular reference to
Reason being the different makers specifications "could" be a little different with the headspacing using other makers shell holders, I have often wondered if this is the cause of so many of the threads seen on forums about some cases not sizing down properly.MISSED wrote:I try to buy like for like with the dies and shell holders ie Redding die and a redding shell holder.

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
Appreciate the feedback and assistance guys. I suspected most dies were interchangeable provided they stuck to the standard thread sizing, but I wasn't to sure about shell holders (noting Lee decided different ones are required for the hand primers).
Some dies, shell holders, priming equipment etc and I'll be getting close to looking at consumables...then a lot more reading/checking to ensure I do things right.
Any idea when the next Aldi sale is on for those ultrasonic cleaners
Trevort, I'll be in contact soon if that invite for a lesson is still available...I'd hate to go in blind without some training from a master.

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
Valid point! I'd feel better using dies etc that matched the press....at least while starting out.Camel wrote:All of the above, with particular reference to

If you buy good shell holders you can specify thickness to match whatever dies you have.Camel wrote:All of the above, with particular reference to

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
Like the other have said dies are 100% interchangeable, Ive never had a problem using a shell holder of a different brand to the dies. A few blokes have run into the odd issue but 99% of the time or better they would be completely interchangeable without a problem.

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
Trev is correct here - the super simplex press takes 5/8 dies instead of the standard 7/8 dies, and only neck sizes cases rather than Full length sizing.trevort wrote:Dies and presses are interchangeable except a particular model of simplex (I think) that has a different thread

Re: Shell Holders and Dies
While on the subject, don't leave Simplex gear out of your equation, its good gear and made right here in Aussie land, they might not have all the flash stuff that the yank makers have, but they have enough stuff to last you a life time of loading, the only thing I don't really like about their range of stuff is their little case trimmers, they just seem a bit low to me. You can either get your gunshop to order their stuff, or go direct to the factory shop via phone.

Thanks Trevor. It's not like I really need one yet, just thought it may be worth grabbing one next time around.trevort wrote:Don't waste money on an Aldi ultrasonic. I'll give you mine until you can upgrade
