Fox Loads for 22 K-Hornet.

Hi Guys.
Normally load my K Hornet 1-12 twist with 34 Nosler Shots HP with Lil Gun,the projectile skips along at 3500 fps for alround use. Magazine restricts me to an over all length of 1.740. Jelly tips of 40 grain have to be seated very deep leaving a gap between neck mouth n projectile ogive.
The projectile (34 shot Hp) is a bit inconsistent in it performance for skin use.
Some stay in side the fox head,some blow the back out of their scull.
Thinking of trying some 35 V Max ,any of you guys used them in a hornet or K or any really consistent projectile for fox skin shooting.

I have only used the 40 gn Vmax in a K. It has always worked well but does depend on the range that the critter is shot in regard to if it will exit or not. Also the length of the projectile and depth of seating into the case has to be taken into consideration when feeding from the mag.

I think there's too much mass in most pills to guarantee no blow throughs. If a 17Rem at max speed will occasionally blow a skin, so will a 35-40gr pill. Maybe try the 30gr from I think Speer?

Big g I used to use the hornet a lot , found the 35 vmax ok but not a patch on the 40 b/tip , I had the same problem with mag length so use to singe round load , my experience with the 35 was it didn't kill quite as well on foxes and was far less accurate in my gun , cheers

Might be more worthwhile looking at something that will pass through a bit more without leaving massive holes and just go for chest shots? Head shots are iffy as your pumping a lot of energy into a small space, naturally it's going to want to explode. Or look at a faster twist barrel with vmax or sierra blitzkings as I reckon they are the softer of the ballistic tips. 35 vmax I never rated in the straight hornet. 40gr were better and the 45gr soft points were good too

a mate of mine used to use the 22 mag projies and they were the goods out to 150 180 yards no problem

Batched up the Winshitter 40 HP magnum projectiles last night.
39.7grains
40.1grn
40.2grn over 200 of this weight.
40.3grn
40.4grn
40.5grn. 20-50 of other weights.
40.6grn
40.7grn
40.8grn
40.9grn
42.1 - 42-7grain
Quality control on weight wasn't high on Winchester list ,or maybe the bulk projectiles were seconds.
Any how , will have play over the weekend,predicted 10-20 mm rain Friday,Sat and Sunday .

eiggib, when I had a K hornet years ago, I used Win 296 powder, Rem 7 1/2 primers and WW cases, think the load was 12.0gns with 45gn Imperial SP projectiles, it was a good load in my rifle. Some suggest that small pistol primers are the go with the Hornet based cases, I didn't try them, but they may help you.
