17HH loads and Chrono

While waiting for barrels to soak and get cleaned I managed to get the 17HH and the magneto speed out to check my hand loads.
As expected my loads are a couple hundred below the factory loads but not that disappointing.
my AR2207 and 20 grain Vmax loads 5 shot Averaged 3462 Fps, S/D 22 and E/S of41 very happy with that.
Second lot of 5 AR2207 but with Nosler 20grns Av 3440 Fps, S/D 35 E/S 90 not bad in my book
the Win 296 on the other hand was all over the place Average 3355Fps, S/D 118 and E/S 261
.
not surprised really. bloody filthy stuff too.
the target shows that it all shoots to about the same point of impact Factory, 3 different projectiles and 2 types of powder into the top right target at 100meters. also the magneto speed bayo on the barrel didn't change the point of impact all that much.
the top right target shot with it on, bottom right with out, just getting fouled and blowing the cobwebs out of me. top left with some of the fliers being me and a bit of the wind
The random hole on the lower left is a stray 20 Vartag from the bore sight move from 50 meters

Don't go rushing out to try Lil'Gun. Of all the powders i tried in my HH 2400 was far and away the best and 2205 was second and 2207 third. The LG was what i would mildly say as fucking outright dangerous. Starting load that was a full 2 grains under max listing had primers range from mild and rounded to flat and primer pocket expanded to beyond useless. Chrono went from 3300 to wait for it wait for it........ 4030 fps!!!!!! with a 20 grain Vmax. Suspecting a melt down of my Chargemaster i repeated with scales and the second shot fired separated the case with the chrono registering another 4000+ fps vapour trail.
I initially got this lot of LG for my 22 Hornet only to find that it was very erratic producing some horrific groups way beyond anything else i had tried till then. Very disappointing. I have no doubt this is batch specific and reading US forums pretty much confirms this.
My current load is a nice mild load of 10.5 grains 2205 and 20 Vmax for around 3450 fps. Cases show good life and accuracy is just over 1/2 MOA.

Cheers Tony, I will heed that warning well.
I have some 2205 on hand so will give that a try again, i didn't get far with it but after all the 2207 is working fine.
cheers again

I have not tried Little Gun but the 2205 does me very well in my 17hh. I load a 20 gn Vmax over 10.1 of 2205 which is accurate, 3/4" @ 100m, and easy on the brass. It is a fantastic cartridge to shoot and cheap to run. Stick to the Australian powder. It is reliable and easy to get hold of. You may get a few more FPS velocity out of it, Maybe, but is it worth the hassle and possible case life reduction??
2205 does the job very well will great accuracy, what more do you really need?

I have not got a 17 HH but have 2 17 Ackleys one likes 4227 the other 2205 tried little gun with similar results Tony got, thought it was very erratic with pressure spikes.
Win 296 is also the same.
I would steer clear of both.

Yep, ready a lot about LilGun being to temperamental in smaller cases. Had some to try in my 5.7 Johnson, but as 2207 works as good as it does, I have moved it on to another who wants to use it.

I found win 296 was erratic groups just went everywhere. Once I changed to lil gun I didn't find it to be the same. I tested on 40*c plus days here and didn't have any issues. As Tony said the batch is obviously a major factor.

I have used 296 in my 17 AH and found it to be as good as 2205 and almost as good as 2207. Re7 was the only one I used that was bad in my rifle, and as I have so much of the other three and 2400 I probably won't need to try it again.

I started off using LilGun but ended up pulling most of the loads & won't use LilGun ever again. Flip if you were close handy you could have what's left of my tin but I think the earlier comments about it should be worth considering. 2400 , 2205 & definitely 4227 have worked pretty well for me.

From my reading it is good in the 22 versions but not so the smaller 17's etc. Seems people either love it or hate it. I have a tub here for the 5.7 Johnson so will give it a test run and see how it goes.
