Polish in new walnut media!

Post by Sharpie »

Hi all, do I have to add a polish to the media in my new case tumbler, or is it an optional extra?
Should I deprime the old brass before tumbling or after?

Is it just me or is it hard to track down 2209 or just about any powder at the moment???

No need for polish. Deprime after polishing otherwise you will end up with media stuck in the flash holes.

Yep, powder is hard to find in many places and is getting more and more expensive.

Spoke too soon!!!!

How long do I let the tumbler run? I get the until it's clean and may vary according to case condition etc, but should it be 5 mins, 30 mins, 3 hrs?

Time depends on how dirty the brass is. I usually run it for about 3 hours.

Sorry, didn't mean to be quite that brief. I was in work mode.

I don't think there is a hard and fast rule about how long to tumble. I wipe the carbon off the necks of my brass using a Krazy Cloth before I tumble so they don't need much actual cleaning just a polish up. I tend to run each batch of 40 cases for 45-60 minutes. Interested to know how long others run the tumbler for.

I just use one of those cheap timers and run for three hours regardless of how dirty the brass is. 3hrs always seems enough.

No problems with brevity here JasonF, appreciate the reply! I only ran it for about 35 mins and thought it still looked a bit dull so ill chuck it back for a few hrs!

Nothing slower than waiting for your brass to clean up to the right stage, I chuck mine in the tumbler and leave it going overnight.

Camel I used to do the same, then one day I put it on and walked out of the shed, then forgot to grab something and turned back in to grab it and found my tumber on fire as the motor had failed. Boat, ammo, powder, primers, fishing gear and rifles all in the shed. Will never leave it on overnight again.

Old story; One of the blokes at the Wagga range (can't remember who) told me how he put brass in the tumbler with a timer one Sunday for 4 or 5 hours. The following Saturday he when to get the brass out of the tumbler and it was as shiny as gold. The tumbler polished his brass for xx hours everyday of the week while he was at work, ha ha, he had the sexiest brass at the range lol.
