Projectile Choices... Advice wanted

Post by kjd »

Hey all couple of choices I need to make that I was hoping to get your advice on..

First up, for my LR set up I've got the 178gr amax set aside but am wondering if the 208gr Amax would be a better choice. Remember this is to be used for LR hunting and on steel. The Tikka's barrel is a 1 in 11" twist.

So thoughts on that would be great.

Second projectile choice I'm looking at is for a 1in12" twist in 223rem.

So far the best looking projectile is the 53gr Vmax it has the higher bc than any other Vmax projectile and higher than all of the Nosler BTs and is cheaper.

What do you blokes think on both of these?

The 53 VMax is absolutely the best varminting projectile in a slow twist 223. Go for it!

I would start with the 178 AMax in the 300wm. More manageable recoil and should be nice and flat.

Cheers, Jason.

Thanks Jason! I don't understand why the 53gr Vmax only comes in 100 packs but either way I was very impressed by its numbers!

It is relatively new. Hopefully the larger packs will appear once normal demand resumes in the US.

I load both the 178 and 208 A-MAX for 4 300WM's.

They both work well on Sambar.
How far you want shoot is the question.

The 208's are a great long range bullet.

I started with the 178's but ended up just using the 208's because we had the for a long range gun!

The 208's shoot half inch groups out of my factory Remington. Very comfortable to shoot too! Ask Missed?

Don't have a 22free so no first hand experience.
Jason did tell me at the Missedathon the 53's are awesome!

Glenn, what sort of real world velocities are you getting with the 178 and 208 amaxes?

I'd be interested in knowing this too.

I want to be able to get out to 1000 yds but basically 300-1000yds and everywhere in between.

I have only just acquired a Magnetospeed to do just that!

As soon as I have them I will post them.

210gn Bergers are also a good choice out of 300 win mag. Although the hunting version is difficult to get at the moment. Stout dose of 2217 gets them moving!

Between to the two 7mm A-Max's I'd go the 208gr. If you're ranging with a laser past 500y, wind drift is your biggest problem. Check the energy figures also you should see a significant difference, but it still comes down to reliable shot placement.

The 53gr V-Max is interesting with an advertised BC(G1) of 0.290 and a length of 0.737" on LFAD. Compare that to the 55gr V-Max with a BC(G1) of 0.255 and a length of 0.810".

Convert these two back to form factor i.e. shape efficiency i(G1) = mass[lbs]/(BC[G1]*dia^2["])

For the 55gr i(G1) = (55/7000)/(0.255*0.224^2) = 0.614

For the 53gr i(G1) = (53/7000)/(0.290*0.224^2) = 0.520

That puts the shape of the little 53gr V-Max near the shape efficiency of an 80gr Berger Match Target VLD. I'd like to see some independent verification of the BC first.

If you can push any given projectile with a length of no more than 0.810" to 3000 fps you shouldn't have any issues getting it stabilise in the 1:12" twist barrel. Something like the 62gr Berger Match Varmint FB might be the limit?
