Case Trimming The Easiest & The Most Accurate.

Post by kjd »

Hi All,

What products do you guys use for Case Trimming?
It is the most hated part of reloading for me, I've tried the Lyman Case Trimmer, the cheap Lee case trimmers with the cutters and calibre specific rods but they suck, so does the case trimmer.

So what is the easiest and accurate case trimmers you guys have used?

I agree Case Trimming sucks but when I have too I use a Wilson micrometre trimmer with the hand crank for everything except the .310 martini. With the wilson I tried the drill chuck adapter but I found I was to heavy handed and often spun the case in the holder. Now I set up the trimmer on a tray park myself in front of a rugby game and go to work. for the .310 i use the Lee Case trimmer with the wooden handle and have never had a problem.

I myself use two trimmers. One is the Lyman, for cartridge’s I use occasionaly.eg 6mm Remmy, 300WM, 375h&H. I’m in no big rush to trim these, it takes me 6 hours over 3 days to do 100 cases, I just plod along.

For the high volume stuff, 223 and 308 I just purchased the WFT. Chuck it in a drill press and of you go. Easy to set up, and you just hoove through the cases. Very clean and neat cuts on the mouth.

A link for those who haven't seen the trimmer.

In My opinion a Lyman Trimmer is hard to go past if you want a good surf sinker.

Do yourself a favor and buy the Wilson.

I have been using an RCBS bench top trimmer for the last 30 odd years, I don't have any drama using a manual one, about the only thing that pisses me off is having to de-burr after trimming, then my fingers get a little cramped holding the case and screwing with the de-burr tool. Had to get a new cutter head last year, I would not even try to hazard a guess as to how many cased I have trimmed over the years. I now trim my cases a couple of thou under the recommended, only have to trim every 5 or 6 firings. Not a real big drama as I said. :D

Occaisonally. Tou only need to trim when the neck gets too long. Just remember, you don't need a long neck to be a goose.

Smee I have done about 4 or 5 reloads on a set of federal and winchester 223 brass that was trimmed initially and I reckon I could go a few more reloads before they will need trimming. I am not running them real hot which would help and I imagine the 243 would be the same.
