130 Bergers 6.5x47L
130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Hello all, im just trying to get some info on the 130Bergers in the 6.5x47L.
Reading stuff from the states they seem to be getting good results H4350 around the 40.5 to 42 grains mark. Ive found our equivalent to that powder is ADI 2209. I loaded up some rounds and went down to the range. 40.8 grains of 2209 shot ok but groups were not consistant. I also found once at 41+ grains i was starting to compress the loads. I havnt done any tests over a chrony will try to do that next range outing.
So my questions are:
*Should i avoid compressed loads in this cartridge?
*Is 2209 a good choice? Ive tried RL 15 with some 123 scenars and its a tack driver.
*Hear of some guys here at home using 2208. I might give this a go next with the 130's to see any improvement.
Any input would be great. Cheers

130 Bergers 6.5x47L
I run 37.5 g of 2208 with Berger 130 vld in lapua cases with cci br4 primers seated .040 thou off the lands in my stolle. 2865 fps with an ES of 20 and an SD of 6 fps. A mild and bloody accurate load in my 6.5x47L.

I ran 42 grain 2209 with 123 scenar at 2910fps, 41.2 grains 142SMK at 2810fps. 26" barrel. I am not sure what your freebore is, but my loads were compressed!

Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
no experience with this cartridge, but I thought a compressed load was best if it is safe, as it keeps the powder column more consistent?

Ive switched over to 2208 with 450Mag primers.
37.8gr 2208 with the Berger 130 about .040" off the lands im getting just under 3000 FPS muzzel verlocity.
Got it going just under 3100 FPS with the 123 Scenar Jammed and 39.3gr RL15. No signs of pressure and SD is single digits.
The groups are not the best thou. About .3 @ 100 and just under a 1" @ 200yards. Any suggestions on what to try to improve?
Thanks Allen

Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Speed is not always the answer. Shoot it where the accuracy is not where the high velocity is.
Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Are the Bergers really sensitive to seating depth adjustment. I did some experimenting with trying to find where the bullet just contacts the lands in my rifle. It turns out that i was actually only .020" off the lands and not .040" like i thought.
I have read the VLD shoot best when they are jumped .030-.040" from the lands.
Changing the seating depth with also effect the pressures inside the cases - Correct?? So with my previous load of powder and only being .020" from the lands, if i seat the bullet another .020" in the cases will this change the velocity and ES/SD of the cases.
Im currently getting ES=12 and SD=6. And Av velocity= 2974

As AI said how do they group? Find the most accurate load as your priority.
Yes Bergers and any other pill will be affected by seating depth. If you look at Bergers website they suggest jumping upto .080 thou.

Berger vld's also like jamming too- try touching and up to 20 thou jam. Found this in my 22BR with 90gr berger vld's. This will give you a bit more room for powder.

a very experienced competitor who seemed to win a lot told me that all long pills like VLDs worked better in the lands.
Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Ok guys i found out the trick to getting the Berger 130's to shoot. Try another bullet......
I used the Lapua Scenar 123's in my initial load development. So i went back to them today and worked the load up again using RL15 powder.
First up: 3 shot groups @ 200yards and the 38.4 gr load best.

Loaded up 5 more at the same 38.4 load. Boom, the sweet spot was found:

Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Awesome group. All spread there from wind by the looks. Waterline is great.
A mate here shoots the 120 sierras in his 6.5x47L with 2208. He tried RL15 and the results werent that good. With his 120's he shot a 60.8 at 800m that was very flat. Its a very accurate gun. But the speeds he is shooting and the BC of the 120 sierras mean he has bugger all if anything compared to the 308. I reckon the 130gr will be the answer for it, as that case hasnt got the balls to run 140gr bullets to decent figures. Those 123's have a BC that I reckon is a little over rated, but it is definitely higher than the 120 and 123 sierra.
Did you try jamming the 130's? And did you try 2209 as well? Im surprised they didnt work for you.
The 90gr bergers didnt group until I had them at least 10 thou jam in the 22BR. And the 155gr HBC is cranking in my 308 with 10 thou jam as well. The VLD style bullets really work well up in the lands.
Im planning to do a 6.5x47 on steriods in the future. Formed from a 260 rem case with the same length neck and shoulder angle. Should have enough capacity to keep up with the 6.5x284 with 140gr bullets, but with less powder used (and hopefully better barrel life too but time will tell).
I will ask my mate tomorrow if he wants some to test and get back to you.

Re: 130 Bergers 6.5x47L
Mmm thats the one hey. I was thinking id like another 6.5mm and was think the 260AI might have been good. Not a barrel burner like the 6.5-284.
The 6.5 Super looks even better cause of the long neck....
