Howdy to all,
I'm thinking of trying to form 17Rem rom 204 Rug brass
Has anyone here tried this as yet. I have been reading some post from the states and a few people seem to be and making some nice brass. The cases apparently are slightly smaller as far as capacity. Im thinking on giving it a try as I can't seem to track any 17 rem brass down at a reasonable price locally. I'm willing invest the time if the brass is better quality to as reports from people about the quality of the Remington brass are not that positive.

I found some 17Rem brass on Shooter.co.au at a reasonable price. But the price gets better the more you buy 500 cases for $ 386.10. I don't want 500 but it get's it down to 77 cents a case. Group buy any one.

Any thoughts.

I have a 100+ twice fired cases...

Have formed 17 rem out of 204 and 223. 223 ends up short neck and 204 your forming part of the shoulder into the 17 rem neck so either trim or neck turn. its easy enough if you have a 222 full length die and a 20 cal die to take it down for the 17.

It worked ok.

I done a batch of 17Rem cases from (Winchester)204R cases a few years ago. After a few mistakes, a neck turning tool purchase and bit of learning how to use it, i ended up with some nice cases.

Main reason i done it was the Rem cases available at the time seemed to be of dubious quallity, with necks going hard and splitting on the second firing with moderate loads. The old Remington brass i have is still goin with 10+ reloads, same rifle/load/dies.

If its from a purely economic viewpoint, i wouldn't bother.
But if you like playing at the reloading bench, go for it. 1st time i had done stuff like this and learned some doing it.

I still can't get any 17 rem brass here is Adelaide at the moment or if it is about it's over $100.00 a bag. I have tried a few places interstate, All out of stock and waiting for it to come in. it is because of this that I am thinking of making it. It is a lot easier to find 204R on the self. Plus I dont mind the tinkering.

Depends how much brass you go through to justify from dies.

Yeah the brass turn over rate will be worth watching got close to 300 pices now (not all useable at this stage)

My brother just picked up an older Rem 700 BDL with a shillan barrel. It came with a heap of brass some good and some not so good and projectiles including some old 22grain pills Called Lee's precision projectiles not sure how old they.Still sorting my way through it and a hundred or so 223cases necked down. The old bloke said he had been using them no worries. But I think we'll steer clear of these.

We bought a hundred new not long before he found this rifle cost $120.00for the bag. 9 were no good straight out the bag so bloody exy brass.

We are now running two 17 Rem's both with separate batches of brass. I'm just going to see how fast we loose brass to fatigue and clumsy ness. Might try a Lee collet die if the split necks get to common.But as I have a heap of 204 brass laying about it still may be worth it.

Thoughts? Buy it, then flog off what you don't need on the shooting forums. If its $100 per 100 in the gunshops ... advertise it at $80 per 100. Or ... sell on usedguns.
