I'm going to show my ignorance here but, is there a difference between a 17HMR and a 17 Hornet?

Heard good things about the 'newer' 17 cals, is any one type standing out from the rest?

Not so much ignorance mate, just un-enlightened,

17HMR is rimrife round based on 22 mag case and the 17 Hornady Hornet is a centrefire based on the 22 hornet case, its a more modernised version of the 17 Ackely hornet with slightly different length, shoulder angle and body taper. But basically close to the same thing.
