Redding "Instant Indicator". Anyone used one?
As the title suggests, has anyone used a Redding Instant Indicator? Was it any good?
Well, I bought one. According to the advertising, it will measure total case length, length to datum (headspace), bullet seating depth and bullet length (base to ogive).
I installed it in my Redding T7, and it seems to be a very good toy. Changing between measurement functions involves removing the top and inserting or removing different bushings, but the two main functions (for me, at least) of measuring bullet seating depth and headspace can both be performed with the ogive bushing in the machine, so no reconfiguring is required. To measure headspace with a bullet seated, however, would require removal of the ogive sized bushing.
The measurements obtained are very repeatable, and very quick. In the T7 press, I simply lower the ram and spin the top from the die to the "Instant Indicator" and raise the ram - then read off the measurement. Setup and calibration were equally easy.
It has already demonstrated some interesting points that would have previously taken much more effort to establish (and therefore I never did), for example that running a round through the bullet seater a second time does actually make a couple of thou' difference to the seating depth.
Without the turret press it would be more of a chore to use, in that you would have to set up the press and bulk measure, but with the turret it's a breeze.
Highly recommended!!
