Virgin Brass Accuracy

Post by lowndsie »

Has anyone done any tests to see if accuracy is poorer when using virgin brass? I've heard that once fired brass is spose to be more accurate because it fits the chamber better but I'm wondering just how much difference there would be?

Personally I dont see it making any real difference unless maybe in bench rest......

Mate I have heard that neck sized brass is more accurate, personally I havent tested it. But I run all my new brass through a FL size Die first. I can understand that fireformed brass that has been necksized is more accurate as the brass is the size of your chamber and there is no change in the size of the case (aside from length and neck diameter).

Lowndsie,
New brass will all shoot to close enough the same as once fired. If it did not the factory ammo would be all over the shop. And yes some is but thats not generally because of new brass.
Neck sized brass in the same rifle is matched closer to that particular chamber and is believed by some to shoot better. But you still have to FL size every so often and I have never seen anyone pulling hair out over this.
I have full sized and neck sized different cases over 30 years and I have not seen any great difference, maybe a slight change of MPI at most (less than 1 inch at 100)
The only time it really matters is when you are forming cases ie for Ackley Impoved or such.
Some rifles might prefer one over the other but as I said I have never heard any screaming about it.
Their are a lot of things worth doing to improve accuracy out of a case but how much accuracy are you looking for ???

cheers

I have never tested to see if there is a difference but usally only neck size when reloading for the17/222/ 22-250/ 25-06 and full lenght resize the 243wssm. The wssm shoots as good as all the others but I generaly only sight in the once on paper and very rarely shoot at paper again (just dosnt have the same effect on me as a rabbit or crow etc). I really only neck size to save having to lube up cases and clean etc when full lenght sizing and I dont think it is as hard on the brass.
