.223rem & magnum primers
.223rem & magnum primers
Currently get good results with compressed 2206H loads. Nick Harvey suggests using magnum primers for more consistent ignition.
Any experience on grouping improvement???
I am aware that I would need to back off loads and rebuild.
Thanks
Bob

Are Small Rifle Magnum primers available??
I think the 7 1/2 Remington Small rifle primer is the hotest, but dunno for sure...

Re: .223rem & magnum primers
You could try BR primers a bit harder in the cup and supposedly a more uniform ignition flame but if you are getting a good result with what you have why change
Re: .223rem & magnum primers
I could be wrong but i think a federal 205 primer is a hotter magnum type primer when compared to a std fed 200 primer. It lights up 25gr of 2208 pretty consistantly when compressed under a 75 gr amax.

Re: .223rem & magnum primers
I use CCI 450's in my 20 practical which is a 223 case necked to 204 cal. These are CCI's small rifle magnum primer and Im getting some very good grouping from them.

Re: .223rem & magnum primers
Yep I dont have a problem with them. I mainly use them in the 22BR for target work but it makes sense buying a thousand or two of one type of primer and using them.
Re: .223rem & magnum primers
According to the 6mmBR website, the CCI 450 primer is the best SR magnum primer for the 6br Cartridge. I also believe that may 223 long range shooters use the 450 primer with 2208/Varget with great success.

I did a little primer puissance test a while ago in my .223 and the Rem 7 1/2 was definitely the most "puisse" - weak of about 6 tested. Hottest was CCI SR Magnum and CCI SR BR primers, followed by No Name 5.56 I got from a mate a few years ago, then Win SR and I don't remember anything else but the Rems were light-on.

Just wondering how reliable the results are (conditions, equiptment & proceedure).

Re: .223rem & magnum primers
I'm using 7 1/2 BR primers for my .223 but not compressing loads. Very happy with the groups I am getting considering I am only starting to reload.
