It is good to hear the projectiles are surviving the speeds of the 17/222. The ADI web site tells me that it is now well over 3600 f/s. I gather it is a 1:9 twist barrel. So far I am happy that they are holding together. Now the real test. There is not much lead in these projectiles. Penetration on the heavier fox will be interesting. Have fun.

I believe that Trev is using a 17Mach1V mate, he hasn't got the class to use a 17/222

Good to hear they are holding up for you Trev, will be trying them out myself in the next couple of weeks, just on paper for the time being, but if some furry comes along and I have a couple of rounds left over, Ill definitely be poking some holes in fur to see how they go. :D

My 25gn vm load is chronied at 3800 fos. That's 17.1gn. I loaded these to 17.5gn so would guess they are going faster. Two smacked rabbits at 30m and I missed a fox with an offhand shot at about 40m. Small entry wound in the rabbit and decent exit but the cockie gave them to his dogs before they posed for photos!

Hi Camel,
Your projectiles will be .405" long@ 17 gn( similar to the HMR projectile) while Trevort had .526" long at 17gn. Yours will have a lot further to jump.

Took the 17 out last night and thinned out the wallaby population along the hay paddocks.( under permit)
The night had the slightest wind and conditions were just about perfect, over cast, cool and no moon.
The 17 projectile fed from the mag with out dramas, CZ527, and preformed beautifully. There was talk that I may have "splash" ( breaking up on impact with no penetration) with these projectiles. I did not find this with "egg shell" skulls the norm. Chest shots were messy. Often I could not find a entry hole until I opened them up. When there was a exit hole it was 20 cent size with obvious projectile break up. There was no chance of a ricochet. With the speed these are traveling at you see the impact and result with almost no recoil.
I may have to sell a few a these if people are interested.

Hi Damien,
No not me. I tend to stick to my small projectiles, 40 gn hornet, and smaller. It is all I use. The 17 HMR are good for the 6mm/243 crew but they can also be drawn down to make those heavy 70+gn projectiles. I have made them myself but have little use for them and no one has asked me to build any.
Projectiles are not getting any cheaper and I see more people getting into swaging but with the Aust dollar as it is, set up costs need to be taken in consideration. You can buy a lot of projectiles for the cost of just the dies. To me it was an investment for the future and the dollar was above parity to the US $ when I put my toe into the murky water of swaging.

Thanks for the heads up

Bill ,watching with interest. I used to use the Bergers 18 grainers in my 17 Rem before Berger stopped making them. They performed very well in that rifle.

Hi Barryb,
I have not tried the 18 gn Bergers, but it goes to show that in the little calibres a grain in weight can make a difference. Some shooting the squirrel are shooting a 21 gn as it apparently shoots better than the 20gn. It is nice to be able to build custom weight projectiles for specific needs.
I was surprised how well the 17gn, long jacketed projectile went in my CZ.
MAY THE NEW YEAR BE GOOD TO YOU.
