Thats what i was thinking knackers, if you can find one at a reasonable price that shoots and reload i cant see any bad things about the 17rem.

The only bad I've heard is that it fouls a bit. but apart from that I think its just an under-used cartridge!

Dave, the .17rem was the .204ruger of the seventies, take the eye of a fly at a thousand yards, kill a bull buffalo at 500yds etc. etc. The tales of it's prowess were endless. But it's big PLUS was it was flat shooting and with the projies available then it didn't exit foxes very often, leaving only 1 small hole in the pelt. And $70+ in the seventies for a fox skin was SERIOUS money as you can imagine. It is quiet (relatively) no recoil, cheap to run etc. and with modern b/tip bullets I imagine it would be awesome on cats, foxes, rabbits and other varmints  The only drawbacks that I can recall was cleaning the barrels, but with the popularity of the .17hmr I don't think that would be an issue anymore, and it was affected by wind more than the heavier calibres as you would expect. a very handy little round and the pro and semi-pro fox shooters loved it which is about as good a recommendation as you will get. Seems to be seriously overlooked today though.
Regards Alpal.

i guess there still is a place for it but your right it does seem to be the 204 of yester year with some writers saying the 204 will be the death of small centrefires 17rem,221 etc But in saying that the newbie 17 rem fireball is set to keep the little ones going id imagine, any rifles being chambered in this round yet???

Are you going to do some group tests with it out to 200 and 300 yards, I'm interested to see how it goes as there are a lot of good rifles around to be had at a very reasonable price. I think a lot of people shy away because of the ammo cost/availability.
When i first bought the rifle i loaded some ammo using the load that came with the rifle and tried it at 250m. The first 5 shot group went 57mm and the second went 64mm. It shoots well. My Velocitys are slow compared to what reloading books tell me but still i have plenty of velocity.

What i have found in the short time using the .17 is that it's fine in the wind and nothing like people say. It's a hell of a lot better than a .22 cal at 3000-3300 FPS.

Good one, bush chook. I believe that the 'semi custom' makers are going with the 17 fireball already, kimber, HS and others

Is there much of a difference between the 17 Remington and the 17 Rem Fireball?

On paper, about 300-400fps with 20 grainers; just a fair bit less powder

My old mans mate was a pro fox shooter for years up at Albert, he said he shot his biggest pig ever with a .17Rem, went 241kgs from memory. Not that id try it, the pills blow up way too easy, I have never had one exit a fox yet, let alone drop a pig. The story was he was out spotlighting foxes and seen it, shot it in the heart, and it ran 50m and dropped. Apparently he made it into guns and game, or one of the mags for his efforts, but I have no idea how long ago or which one.
Kinda far fetched but he is a reliable type of person?

Dave, as well as the .17 I also have a .204, .22-250, a .222 and quite possibly a .14/.221 on the way, and it is equal to all those rounds for varmints to 300 meters no worries and I for one hope that it stays around for a while yet.

I like the look of a 17 Rem or a 17 Fire ball.

I am not too sure if they would get much of a work out with me though, I am still figuring out what I will be hunting the majority of the time, still working on getting contacts with farmers and checking out state forests.

I would so like a CZ 527 though, I know they make 527 varmints in 17 rem, and I would assume a CZ 17 fireball is not too far away.

I own the arch typical T3 in .243 and love the thing, so a Tikka M55 would nicely compliment it as well.

Arghhh so many choices.

cant go wrong with the older model tikkas, they shoot like a house on fire and make t3s look dog ugly in my opinion!
