URGENT - 2206H - different to last batch????

Post by wb243 »

Good Evening!

I need some urgent advice please! Off for a shoot tomorrow with my 20 Practical and am loading some new rounds with the same load that I always use, but the cases look like they're much fuller than what they were with the last batch.

The powder is part of a new batch so maybe it's volumetric density (?) has changed? I have checked everything else including my load information, scales setting, scales zero...

Help please!

I can't help I'm sorry, I've only been reloading for a couple of years and don't have the experience of others here, but how much fuller are they? If you give the cases a tap down gently on the bench then the bullets should seat ok without compressing the load.
Brad may log on and read this, he has a 20 Prac.

when you change anything in your load, including a new batch of powder, you are supposed to start low and work up again because it can vary.

Are you charging them the same way you used to? I find if I fill a case straight from my thrower the powder is higher in the case compared to filling via the funnel.

Thats the best thing about buying powder in 4kg tubs, you have a long time in waiting before having to recheck your loads with a new batch.

Start a grain below what you were using and work up slowly is my opinion.

What charge were you using in 20 prac and do you know what velocities?

Thanks for all the feedback fellas. Yep, I was filling the cases exactly the same way as last time. And you're right - I'm going to have to do some more load testing - turns out my 20 Prac was shooting waaaay high for some reason. I've just bought a second hand Nikon Monarch 6-24x50 so maybe it was bumped and the zero has moved. Which is bladdy annoying! Also hope the scope is not a dud...

Thanks again.

There has been a bad batch of powder although I think it may have all ended up in the States.

Apparently it is somewhat hotter then normal.

I am not sure whether it was 2206 or 2217.

Why not send ADI an email give them the batch details etc and see what they say? I have found them to be very helpfull, when working up loads for projectiles not listed elsewhere.

Its a bit late for URGENT help... But none the less..

Have just finished off my last batch of 2206H for the .223 and opened up a new one, and with the thrower and scales all untouched the new batch seems to be throwing around .3gn lighter... So with the correct adjustments made my case's are also fuller than the last batch...

They Must have slightly changed something...

Like I said, prob no help to you now, but anyone else who uses 2206h might find it helpfull...

Thanks Rumpus - good to know there's a common theme! Ie: less dense powder.

Are you going to retune your loads? I'd be interested to know if loads with the 'new' powder and much different to loads with the old powder...

Does load development HAVE to include a chrony? Or is it more just for safety? Yes it would be nice to have everything I need for reloading at the start but want to buy the essenitals first and get the toys later. I think a local shooter has a chrony but he is a pain in the arse and avoiding him would be prefered!

You don't necessarily need a chrony to start reloading, it is nothing more then an instrument to assist in knowing where you are with muzzle velocity.

They are not an essential, however, once you have one you will not look back.
