Price of .17HMR ammo?

Post by Knackers »

G'day everyone, just wondering about the price of 17HMR ammo in your neck of the woods?
In my nearest town we use to have two gunshops. One is not operating ATM for legal resons. The other gunshop had a price rise in ammo about three weeks after the competion closed its doors and has had several more price rises in the last couple of months.(Chinese demand for metals?)
The last time I was in there he didn't have any Hornady ammo but said it would be in, in about three weeks but they were going up to $31 a box

I went 100 kms in the other direction to have some smithing done and while there I asked about the rise in .17HMR ammo and the bloke grabbed a price list and said yes they have gone up and the price list was only a week old. He did a quick calculation on the calculator and said yes they are going up to $23.50.

Are there different suppliers for ammo or is one shop just being a bloody rip off.
Now there was a thread about people buying scopes OS and the LGS missing out on $$$$, %%%%%, and eventually closing down, well this LGS is doing a pretty good job of closing himself down IMO, he does a roaring trade and has no comp for 200km radius, but instead of picking up volume he is now picking up % aswell. Fuck him IMO, he is not doing anyone any favors, and newbies would be shocked at what some parts of the sport will cost them.

Rant over.

And therein lies the problem, everyone is greedy. If nobody uses their LGS, they simply go under. But on the other hand, the LGS needs to treat the customer fairly, not rip them off just because they're the only local dealer. It works both ways. Especially these days when you can simply look on the 'net and find the best price. You do have to allow for freight costs though, and bulk purchasers will get a discount from the wholesaler so the small local dealer will always be more than the city "big guys". If your LGS is a reasonable bloke, tell him what you've found. If he's a good guy and is simply being charged too much by the wholesaler, he'll find out why. If he's just ripping you off, at least he'll know that he's been caught out.

HMR ammo price was all over the place the last time I bought any. I have a box of Winchester from HPGS that I must have bought 10 months ago, labelled at $19. I also have a box of Federal labelled at $23.50 and I probably got that at about the same time (don't know who I bought it from though). I bought a bulk load a while back so I don't know what the current price is.

How much of a savings is there if you buy 500 (10 packs)?

If I was you knackers, I would ring up trevort and say "next time you are coming for a shoot, pick me up a brick!"

I know it doesnt support your LGS but fair is fair and maybe they will realise their prices are too dear!

Shit a brick (pun intended) the cost of this stuff sure has gone up since I last bought some. I seem to recall buying a brick of 17 gn Hornady from HPGS for about $130 ($13 /box). Admittedly it was about 3 years ago.

G'Day Knackers

my "local" (512km round trip) dealer has 17gn Honady varmint express going for $27 per pack but buying it by the brick last time I think I got them for about $24 per pack. I have to admit I am pretty happy with this looking at the other prices people are being charged in the more populated regions. If I was going to be charged $31 a pack I think I would be telling the dealer to take a flying fuck especially if you can get them $7 cheaper in northern south australia.

We outback south australians are lucky to have a dealer of the calibre of Des Kemp in Pt Augusta. The man makes a living but he isnt greedy and if he gets offered a discount then it go's straight to the customer

Geeze you are all poor buggers Brisbane has it good the last time I was at Cleavers at margate I bought a brick of Federal 17 vshok's for about 16 a box, and in bris CCI gamepoints are 19.80 a box or 180 a brick. Federals and hornady's are cheaper at around 15/17 a box when you buy a brick
