New to me 17 MkIV
Howdy All, Kind of been a long time since I have been around the traps.
I picked up a second hand 17 MkIV built on a Brono 527 the other day. Looking at forming up some brass for it well necking down some 20 VT brass Any tips would be appreciated.
All the 20 VT brass I have I've made myself and a its all neck turned. I also have a lot of semi finished 20 VT brass sitting here I can finish off to 17.
So My question is can I get away necking it straight to 17 from 20 in 2 steps and avoid a second neck turn if I neck turn at the 20 cal stage.
Cheers Flip

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
Welcome back Flip
I've got a 17 Mk 1V in Sako & a Fireball in CZ527 but its been a good while since I did any forming for either of them or reloading. Will see if I can find some of my notes & come back if I can. One things for sure though , when you get it properly set up you'll have a good shooter & you won't regret.
Good luck
Barry

Many thanks Barry,
So far I'm really happy with the purchase, nice bit of wood a few marks, barrel and mag have no visible use, not so much as a mark on the mag follower.
look forward to catching up with every one. its been to long.

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
Glad you could drop by Flip, it really has been a while.
When I did my 17/222, started with virgin 222 brass, necked down to 20, which you have done, I then went down to 17 using two bushes, one halfway, I then turned some of the brass, I guess its pretty much the same, just longer. Lost interest in it and sold it to Branxhunter.
What bullet you planning on using, I only have some Nosler shots 20gn hp, yell if you want some to try.

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
G'Day Camel,
Many thanks.
I picked up 700 hornady 25grn Hp's for cheap as a couple years back. I also have 300 or so of the Nosler varmagedon Hp's so will give em both a crack. What size bushings did you go with of the top of your head.

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
I think the bushes I bought from Camel were a .199" and a .198". One of them was reamed out a little using wet & dry paper; it might have been the 0.199".

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
If they are already turned at 20 then you should have no drama going straight to 17. Formed from 223 then the case wall is so thick when it becomes neck, the fl expander ball splits them in the way back out but annealing stopped that. If yours are already turned and normal neck thickness at 20 you should have no drama

Re: New to me 17 MkIV
The finish bush was 199, the one Marcus indicated I reamed out, was at around 212. Pretty sure they are the numbers.

Hi Flip long time no read
As Trevor said if you are already at 20 Cal have neck turned and annealed you can go straight to 17Cal.
As the 17 Mach 1V is not a Saami spec case there is no standard dimension for the Neck
On my 17 Mach I used a 197 bush for a 199 loaded round in a .200 chamber chamber
