Got a mate who has been hitting pigs with his however has been complaining about them running on after a heart/lung shot.
He is using some sort of shotgun powder which he did tell me but I've forgotten ( H100 or something ) and 148 gr hp.
I said that it wasn't traveling fast enough. That said he should be using AR 2205 .
Or buy another rifle
Thoughts folks ?

Re: .357 rifle
If he is using H110 stick with it, should give at least 100fps more than 2205.
What size pigs? Ive shot hundreds with 357 and it is marginal on bigger animals, sometimes it will drop them on the spot others will travel a fair distance..

Re: .357 rifle
No experience with pigs (or the 357) but from experience with other larger animals a higher shoulder shot will be more effective, still just as dead but on the ground a lot quicker

Re: .357 rifle
H110 and 2205 burn hotter than pistol powders and if you start to push them they will lead up your barrel.
Sorry, cant help with how they work on animals, my experience is shooting 357 out of a handgun.

Re: .357 rifle
I've only ever used win 296 in the 357, I don't know how about the other powders.
My experience with it on the bigger pigs is similar to 220s, it pulls some up easy and others run on. He might try a heavier weight projectile and see if he notices an improvement too. Especially if running lead.
As much as I love using my 357 on pigs, my 44 mag is much better.

Re: .357 rifle
H110 is repackaged 296 probably the pick of powders in the 357 if your using jacketed and chasing velocity.
Projectile choice can have a fair impact on 357 performance, near impossible to have a bullet that will perform well when launched from a 2" revolver and at significantly higher velocity from a rifle.
Hornady list velocities their bullets are designed to work at, 158gr XTP SP or 180gr XTP HP align with the velocity you will get from a 357 rifle.
