Norma brass

Post by zzsstt »

I've been using Nosler Custom brass for a while, and at $50/50 it's not cheap but it can be loaded straight out of the box, no sizing or any other work is required.

Just to experiment, I mail ordered some Norma brass, for the stupid price of $129/100. I figured that for that price it had to be something special. Has anyone used this stuff? I opened the package today - the cases are in a plastic bag with a hand written label. Of the 50, not one has a circular case mouth, many are crushed beyond the point where they will even fit on my case mouth expander (the expander used before neck turning) because the stop screw won't go through the crushed case mouth. One case is dented in the body. It's all internally clean and has no carbon in the primer pocket, otherwise I'd say if was used brass that had been walked on before being picked up.

Is this normal? For nearly $1.50 a case I'm disappointed to say the least! I've sent an email to the importers, and I'll call the shop in the morning, but I am REALLY disappointed!

I won't say yet, I'll wait until I get their comments. They are however listed as a dealer on the importers (Parabellum) web site.

I've just expanded and then neck sized a single case to measure. The neck thickness uniformity is OK, within about 1.5 thou' all round, but at an average of about 12.25 thou' it's a bit thinner than the Nosler. The primer pocket is so deep that my uniformer doesn't reach the bottom, and the flash hole was too small for my Sinclair flash hole deburrer, or the guide of my case mouth measure, to go through without using the deburring tool to enlarge it first.

If this is typical, it may be great brass (I'll reserve judgement) but it will need a lot of work to get there!

Back whe I still had the rigby's I tried both Norma and Bell brass; the normas was way more uniform, and seemed to give better results. Can't comment on any other caliber. I suspect that most of the European brass/ammo producers make the stuff to stand up to the required pressure specs, as not much more, except for Lapua with their speciailised stuff; they seem to know that the wildcatters/benchresters are going to push the limits..
