250 loads
Anyone want to suggest some compnents for a load for my new howa/hogue 1500 22-250?
Im going to be loading 55gr ballistic tips but am open to opinions especially since the vmax are a flat base compared to the boat tail of nosler and sierra.
Still tossing up between 2208 and BM2, only ever used cci or winchester primers on my hornet and im planning on using remington brass as i can use factory loads to break in the barrel.
What does everyone think.....
Cheers

I only use the 50gr Nosler B/Tips and sierra 55gr SBT now, but when i bought the rifle i tried a few different loads.
50gr Nosler B/Tips - 34gr BM2
52gr Sierra HPBT - 33gr BM2
55gr Sierra SBT - 34.5gr 2208
63gr Sierra SMP - 33gr BM2
Have a test load for the 40gr Nosler B/Tip to try.
All the above loads shot well inside an inch at 90m.

cheers fellas
Yeah i pick it up tomorrow after only having a 17HMR to shoot for a couple of months and i have a few larger critters around that need some attention so i will be glad to get out there again.
Have you guys noticed much accuracy wise between flat bases and boat tails? I think im going to go with the 2208 and primers well im still in the air, probably what ever my dealer suggests.

250 loads
dont count out the cheaper components either !
my 22/250 loves remington 55gn cor-lokt projectiles, taipan 40gn hp's and AR2206. the remingtons shoot into half the group of the nosler and sierra's which were all under an inch as well !

Also throw the 50gr Sierra Blitzking in the mix as well, my old weatherby used to prefer this over the vmax for some bizare reason and consisantly shot better groups at under max charges! Like brad said though dont be afraid to try the cheaper stuff, some of the best groups i ever shot were with factory winchester 40pack jacketed hollow points
for some reason it just loved em, go figure

funny how cheap gear works well
I ended up with 55gr blitzkings, BM 2 and cci benchrest primers. I will try some loads up either this weekend or maybe in a week or so. Got a fishing comp to concentrate on first. If the factory remingtons go under an inch, I think my loads will be pretty accurate.
The empty cases have been prepped up with neck sizing, primer pocket uniformed and flash hole deburred. Will weight sort them then start loading.

Welcome to the forum Brad

hmmmm another Yatesey...could be fun times ahead
I used to own a Howa 22/250...back in the days when they were called CMC Mountaineers....prolly 15 years ago..jeez that went quick
I used Winchesters 748 powder...back then it was comparable in price.
I think you chose well as the BM will go through a powder measure 'nicer'
I never had any success with the Blitz group wise ...though I tried 50 grainers not 55's.
From what I have read on this forum from the blokes that shoot 'em todays VMax and Ballistic tips are shit hot performers I reckon you should try some
I used to use the factory Winchester 55gn projies for 'long tailed rabbits' and goats as there was always plenty of shots fired and they were cheap, they performed really well and grouped under the inch, so I never bothered with much else.
I used Nosler 60gn Solid bases for pigs, but I can't really say they performed any better than the winnies, I think I was too believing in all the advertising crap about bullets 'blowing up' on big boars
I only head shot them anyway
Enjoy the 250 they are a versatile caliber

Mate thats my pet load too. (55g nosler 35g 2208, federal primers) Works so well the first time, .5 MOA at 100m, had no need to experiment. Also a relatively mild load that wont kill your barrel quicklyprodj1000@hotmail.com wrote:35.7grns of 2206 works very well and 35gr of 2208 work well
i now only use 55gr ballistic tips (nosler) now in my .250 and i use federal primers

Heres a bit of an update, Started at 31.6gr of BM2 and worked up in 0.2gr increments. The 31.6, 31.8 and 32gr loads all shot into different holes. The 32.2gr and 32.4gr shot into the same hole. No signs of pressure on the primers etc so I will go up to 32.6gr and up to 33gr for the next test. The load OAL is 2.5 inches with CCI benchrest primers and rem brass thats been fired once and necksized.
If i get to 33gr without pressure signs, I might go up in 0.1gr increments, but if i can get 32.6gr of powder to put shots into half an inch thats where i will be sticking. Should be getting just on 3600 fps and theres no need for going faster really

Brad,
You will find several 'nodes' during your 'ladder test' ....(which is what your really doing) I work up to pressure signs as it is good to know where it starts so you have a benchmark sort of thing....I then come back in load to the next lower 'node' and that's the chosen load for that pill in that gun.
I would have thought you'd get a bit more powder than that before you see any pressure but.......your doing it well by playing it safe

yeah mate steady steady, im playing with brass now and will do the 32.6 to 33gr loads to see how they go, i dont really want to make them all up and get pressure signs at 33gr then have to somehow dispose of 3 rounds.
What i am a bit dissapointed about is my lee balance scales dont go up to the 150 odd grains that a case weighs. I cant sort them by weight at all so im not expecting the best accuracy but this calibre it seems i cant get it wrong. I have only ever loaded the 22 hornet before and i got that down pat to sub MOA groups. Took so long though- damn things.
Wont get to shoot this weekend as i have a fishing tournament, though next week I should get out and keep the handloads going.
cheers
