22-250 - Nosler Custom Brass

Post by Klicker »

Is anyone out there using nosler custom brass? I've bought 100 and started loading and found that 2209 is filling the cases using the ADI recommended ranges for 55 Gr Projectiles. There goes my idea of using 2209 for all my 22-250 workups.

I have checked and rechecked my weights and the ADI weight ranges and they're correct. I suspect that nosler custom cases are smaller capacity when compared to most other cases.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with over pressure using ADI recommendations for nosler brass in any calibre?

Otherwise I'm buying a collet bullet puller and going back to my original idea of using BM2.

My 22-250s likes 2208.

Also have read that 250's generally like 2206 and BM2 as well.

I have been using Nosler brass in .223 and .270 (necked down for 25-06). My experiences have been positive, the deburring is quite good and neck thickness variation is normally less than 1 thou' on a case, and normally only a couple of thou' or so through the box of 50.

I assume that you are talking about new cases here. With .223 cases the first load - let's call it the fireforming load - will not take a maximum (according to the book) load of BM2 and leave room for a projectile. In subsequent reloads of these cases the full load only comes to the base of the neck, so I guess they expand a fair bit. I have been told that the brass is quite soft compared to the brass some other manufacturers use.

Notes:

1/ The above cases are neck sized only between loads.

2/ My chamber is close to minimum SAAMI dimensions, so there is little lengthwise expansion of the cases.

3/ I don't have my records with me, so I think it's BM2 but it could have been 2206H

4/ If we use primer flattening to define pressure (no other apparent signs), then these cases with max (book) loads of BM2 or 2206H show very much less flattening than Winchester Supreme (Ballistic Silvertip) factory rounds in this rifle.

OK thanks guys. I'll stick with the current loads and see what happens zzsstt's comments make sense as the cases are Full Length sized. Off to St Mary's this week sometime to sort my zero and start working them up see what happens. I will be kneck sizing the brass from here on in so will be interesting to see how much capacities increase by.

The brass itself looks great. Nothing against it so far, probably just the Full length sizing keeping capacity down. I havn't FL sized in some time, neck size all my 7mm RM brass.

Cheers

Will keep you posted on the results its for my shiny new Savage 12 VLP.

Did some more thinking last night and realised I had to run the barrel in to start with anyhow .. so I worked up 30 shots of 37gr of 2209 under 55 Gr Nosler BT's for the break in process today. This is the ADI minimum so figured I couldnt go wrong.

At the range the primers where a little flat, but not excessively so, the bolt worked smothly and wasn't sticky, so I stuck with them and ran the barrel in on my new Savage VLP.

I've never run a barrel in(my first new rifle) but I have been reading about the subject and figured that I'd was best to err on the side of caution.

I used the 1 shot clean for the first 5 shots and then 5 shots and clean for the next five groups. the results where interesting. first single shots where a messy group and indicated my windage was considerably out. I stuck with the scope setings for the first 4 to see how consistent the rifle was. first group of singles with a clean in between each was about 1.5 inches (st mary's so 50 meter range). once the singles where out of the way I was impressed at the first group of 5, about .5 inch which continued to tighten as I worked right through to group 6 cleaning in between groups and while sorting the scope zero out between groups. groups 7 and 8 where three shot groups and where both under the half inch.

Considering I've never used the rifle and was a bit shakey to start with, new gun nerves I guess and the ammo wasn't exaclty "worked up" for accuracy I was VERY impressed and very glad I stuck with minimum loads for my first day at the range. just as well I just ordered a new collet bullet puller for the press, there's about 40 rounds I need to rework.

I'll stick a pick of the work up targets up later today.
