Post by mitchellchandler_au »

Hi all,
Just got my 6.5x47 back from the gun plumber. I was wondering what loads you guys are using. I have some 123gn noslers and lapua, 136gn. and 139 lapua.

Thanks,

Hi mate I run 123 GR Lapua silver jacket with 39.5 gr 2208 up its clacker Federal primer 20-25jump and .288 neck on lapua brass had some nice groups with this load and the same groups at 38.3GR 2208
barrel is 1:8 maddco.Did go all the way to 41GR 2208 in load development but the groups did not improve and the bolt lift started to slightly stiffen (not a good sign)

Con only ever measure mine from the ogive on the pill with the comparator gauge
Too much variance in the tips from manufacturing.

Okay, what length are you using for that? Reason I ask is that QL is showing many of the internet popular loads to be a tad hot ... for example I have a new 6.5x47Lapua just done, Lapua brass, CCI-450 primer, 123gr Nosler Custom Comp, COL of 2.628" (base to bullet tip so some fudge factor there) kisses the lands and QL is telling me about 37gr AR2208 is maximum ... but lots of people seem to be running higher loads of at least 1gr higher and then talking of working upwards. The Custom Comps are only about half-way down the neck, reamer specs were 6.5 x 47 Lapua .291 NK .140 FB.

Just trying to figure a starting load to fireform x50 pieces of brass and brake the barrel in, plus get the scope sighted for some more serious load work.
Cheers...

Con I use a hornady comparator and I do not zero the verniers and it comes in at 3.118,if I zeroed them it would be less 1.004
so the ogive OL would be around 2.114.
Some people like them on the lands but I work on percentage because of variants in loading, good place to start is 10 in or 10 out
if you are just on the lands and you have any variants then you are over 50 or 100 percent difference in your loads
my pills are about half way down the neck because the reamer had a long thought and I use only 3 thou neck tension
I have found the deeper the bullet seating causes higher pressures on ignition and pressure spikes when jammed into the lands
Load data is not specific across the board and is only a good guide ,all rifles and barrels will have there sweet spots in running and this is what we try to find
as long as you do not have pressure signs all should be good mate.
As stated 10 in or 10 out is a good start I use one pill only at a time and try to find a nice group at 200m , when I find a good group with a safe load but am still not happy with how tight it is then I will play with seating depths to try and get the groups tighter and so on!
You are looking for 1 raggy hole at 200M.This is sweet.
Now in saying all this mate there are blokes that shoot great with jammed pills and will disagree with what I have said from there experience
and have had great success
so the best thing to do is play BUT don't screw your head and only use one pill at a time and only change one thing at a time
and when you change one thing you will have to start over from the beginning.

Hope this helps Con Cheers Brent

Thanks for the replys guys,
I started with the 136 scenar with 35gn of 2208. got an average of .389 over 4 groups i fired. out of interest what would be your guess as to the velocity? using 35gn. of 2208 out of a kreiger 25'' barrel. I wont get a chance to chronograph the load for a few weeks yet.

G'day All,
have you considered 2209? I use it with my 6x47lapua and it fills the case nicely and shoots like a ppc with CCI small magnum primers and 107gn SMK's.
2208 "might" be a bit fast, I like to have the case as close to 100% full with the slowest powder that gives me the best accuracy and highest MV.

Hi

And yes I would agree with Ned Kelly
But anything over 123GR
in the x47 case they usually go to 2209 powder it seems to perform better than the 2208 with the heavier pills

Have had some of the excellent groups at 200m with the lap 108GR SJ scenars with 37gr 2208
but at 500m-600m at the range was very unpredictable.

So I moved up to 123GR as the 108 lap is almost the twin to the 123 in length and ogive.
more food for thought.

Cheers

Ned is talking about the 6x47 and 107gn bullets. Not the 6.5x47 and 108gn bullets.

For my three 6.5 Lap rifles I have found 38.5gn (+- 0.2gn) to be the go to load for the 123gn Scenars.

For larger bullets, like your 136gn ones, go with AR2209 or RL15. The burn rate is more suited to the cartridge.
