Recommend me a cost effective 308 pill please

Post by trevort »

I may be reloading for two young blokes with 308s. Not shooting anything requiring a premium hunting bullet and reasonable accuracy at lower end of the cost spectrum would be the go.

Probaly in the 125 to 150 gn range

I have a 100 165gn SSTs bought for my 300wsm that have been sitting on the bench for years so will load them up for one of the kids but thats not what he will be buying long term

Sierra Game king? If they are anything like the 22 cal gamekings, you'll be pleased.

What are they generally shooting Trev?

My favorite 30 cal pill for pigs and the like is the rem core lokt 150gn RNSP designed for the 30-30. devastating on pigs from the 308 or 30-06.

Another good one is the Speer hot core 130 or 150gn. good value for money at $30 ish for 100.

Cheapest 150gr you can find ... buy in bulk. Matters not whether its Remington, BulletFactory, Dwyer, Turton, Hornady, Sierra, Highland or whetever. I grabbed x700 BulletFactory 150gr and load them infront of a minimum charge of AR2207 for younger shooters.

If the young blokes are really recoil sensitive, the 125gr Sierra FN will get them off and running or 130gr Speer.

Thing about kids is they take the totally 'wrong' projectile and just kill shit ... could be a lesson in that for us older wiser hunters.

Consider as well being the 'front' for a much larger 5000 projectile purchase and divide it amongst a group. Up here blokes are doing that with powder and projectiles to get some savings in these days of ridiculous pricings.
Cheers...

Have use a fair few 125gn Sierra spitzer Game Kings in my 308, they are reasonably priced and kill stuff well, light on the recoil for youngsters as well. Have a good supply of 150gn Hornady Interlocks, just cause they were pretty cheap. Any projectile in your weight range will do the job very well on all game the size of pigs, goats, fallow, for that matter all the deer species up to those bullet proof ones down south.

Sorry guys, I shouldnt have said kids. 19 and 21, legally adults with their own guns. One is my daughters boyfriend. The other I just met last night. I have clients who own a winery and pests rip the bird nets off the vines, they are very expensive. My daughters boyfriend bought a gun to take camping with his mates. He isnt a serious shooter (yet, might change if I get him to the Missedathon) so something that goes bang is all he needs

The young bloke with a 308 is my clients next door neighbour and he does pest protection duty. He has kept his brass and I offered to reload it for him. We saw a Sambar in the spotlight and he told me that there are heaps on his (parents) 30 acres but he never shoots them as he doesnt know how to skin and butcher them and why kill it if you cant use it . I thought that was a great attitude for a 19 year old. So he only shoots pests with thin skin that are doing damage.

125gn spitzer gamekings you reckon. I'll find a price.

(ohh and the winery owner knows how to skin and butcher but his cool room has broken down, look out when its fixed!!)

Sierra pills are usually well-priced and accurate. For an all-rounder I'd suggest the 150gr SBT, easy to load as its a boat-tail too. The 125gr is also worth considering as a pest-destruction load ... or just find whatever is cheapest.

If one of them has heaps of brass, ask what the factory load was and match the projectile weight and style ... more likely to shoot close to point of aim and reduce resighting efforts.
cheers...

Try some Australian made 130gr Taipan projectiles if you can find them at your LGS. Accuracy has always been more than reasonable for me.

I'd sell you some of mine but I'm definitely at the other end of the scale.

they look like the go. I'll see if I can convince them to spend $250 and do an order. I could try those in the 300wsm

Let me know too please.

I've just bought an old BLR in 308 and am looking for an economical bullet to run in them. 150gn Winchester PowerPoints or Remington CoreLokts will work nicely and should be cheaper if they are available.

1.5in high at 100, 1.5in low at 200 means a dead pig out to 200m.

He has a 1000. I spoke by pm and was giving mr taipan a chance to reply to email. Which he didn't. If Sean has gotten back to you and you've done a deal no problem. If not are you happy to take 500 each?
