40gr Hornady

I was given a pack of 40gr Hornady projectiles to shoot in my 204 so was after some advice on how people load these up. At this stage im not even sure if the Sako with the 1:12 twist will group them. I have only put 39gr BK's through it so not sure if i use the same formula or whether something different is required.

my tikka t3 shoots them, my mates shoots them better. depends on the barrel, some 1:12's shoot them and others don't.

204 wise the 39SBK's are the bullet of choice in most.

Well it sounds like they might be worth loading up, especially with the availabilty of the 39gr BK's. Off to the bench i go.

I use 23.7gr of reloder 10x with a 40gr vmax in my 20 practical. Groups well, but I do need to work on seating depth with them.

my 2 20Pracs love them. Tikka has a 1:12 Ruger barrel, Sako has a 1:10 Lothar Walther. They occasionally have v good specials on them for bulk buys too.

Prepared 6 loads this morning based on the best results i had with the 39gr Siera's.

2206H powder - 27.1gr - 27.3gr - 27.5gr & 2208 powder - 28.3gr - 28.6gr - 28.8gr

Will post the pics up when i get a chance to shoot them.

Do you seat the Sierras or the Hornadys deeper Trevort, due to my lack of experience im not sure what effect the ogive has on the bullet when fired. I have loaded all the above loads to a total length of 57.55mm which is the max the mag on the Sako will fit due to being a short action.

Joe, the ogive is the point on the pill where it engages the rifling, like if you think about the design of the pills the taper is different so the point where they reach 5mm wide is at a different place on a VM than it is on a BK. Therefore it is irrelevant measuring the length of a loaded round tip to base to compare with another with a different pill, you need to measure from the point where it engages the lands to keep the "jump"or lack of it, consistent.

If that doesnt make sense I will take a photo for you, but not tonite, 6 year old birthday party about to start!!

I think i undestand but please correct me if im wrong, you are refering to the tapered section at the base as the ogive and the larger the ogive the deeper the projectile needs to be seated, so the projectile area touching the side of the case is what is important and should remain consistant.

Other End The ogive is where the bullet expands from the tip untill it reaches its calibre in this case .204.
Andy Montgomery has written a series of articles in the last issue Two issues of Guns and Game about the basics of reloading.In here explains his way of finding the seating depth of the rifles he is reloading for it is a good read.

when i had the 303 i slit the side of an old case [always used wini casesand the same pills] and seated a pill way out.then i chambered the round lightly and extracted it carefully.measured the length then set the loading die 2 though shorter.
seemed alright.
maybe it will help someone.
