.223 recipe's for 40gr pill

Post by Alcaporn »

Hi all

I need to do a load development for a Browning A-Bolt in .223 with a Redfield scope with Accurange recticle so it needs to spit out a 40gr pill at 3800fps to be able to use the scope to its full potential. Primers ?, cases ?, powder ? & pojectiles ? anything would help.

If anyone has a good recipe for a .223 with a 40gr pill it would be much appreciated. :?

Cheers

I have some 40gr V-Max's here but haven't worked them up yet. The plan is

Lapua cases
Federal 205M primers
Benchmark2 powder
Hornady 40gr V-Max

Should almost be able to keep up with the 20 cals

My cz 527 loves

40grain VMAX
25.8 grains Benchmark 2
Winchester case
Remington small BR primers

well under listed max load but showed greatest accuracy out of my rifle.

group shot at 100m

Thanx for the replies.

Jason F, i would be very curious to see what kind of results you get when you have had time to make & test that recipe. Please keep me posted.

Richta, i dont surpose you put those through a chrony & know the speeds buy any chance do you :?:
By the way, very impressed with the group ! :)

Cheers

I had some Sierra 40grn HP in the cupboard, decided to load then in the 223,

BM2 25.5, WSR, Win cases. Tikka 595 22" Groups .8"

Chronographed(3meters from end of barrel), 3,100 fps.http://ausvarmint.kjd84.com/forum/posti ... 8246fea1d8#

Other people report 3,400 fps with same load.

For a light projectile BM1 will give better velocity.

What distance do you set up from thr chronograph?, 3m seems a long way, velocity would be falling by then.

I use 40gr noslers in my 222 rimmed, they should be able to be pushed pretty close to 3800, they are an accurate pill, about the best of the 40's as far as BC as well. I use 2207 but not sure if this is still the best for the 223 being that little bit bigger and winnie small primers.

40g V-max
BM2 (best of the 2) or AR2206H
WSR Primers
Winchester brass (FLS)

3600 - 3800 fps

The 40g pill is the most accurate (that i have tried) out of my Sako 75 VLS (1:12 twist from memory). Shoots very well, 5c piece size groups at 100m.

I use 27grns of BM1 with 40grn V-max ,put it over my cronograph and get 3850fps(why buy a 204  )
which seems fast for 223 but was testing a 243 and 270 at same time and readings where normal. Before everyone tells me 25grns is the max in nicks book i have a older one of his manuals and the max is listed as 27.5grns.

Mine is 1:12" twist. Off the top of my head all American and lux models are 1:12" twist.

Varmints with a 25.5 inch barrel (mine) are also 1:12" twist

Varmints with a 24 inch barrel (the laminate and Kevlar versions) are 1:9" twists

Im not 100% sure about this would pay to double check!

thinking of getting one Curan  ?

cheers

Hmmm I have used a 40gn Hornady TAP rounds and they turned me right off the 40s. Dunno what type of projie the TAPs use but I have found them badly wanting. Like a 35m chest shot requiring a follw up.....

One reason why I am not overly a fan of the BDC scopes, restrict the rifle to one bullet weight and that may not be the best shooters for that rifle. My tikka seems to like 50 and 55s so I'll stick to them unless going for goats.

First step

replace the barrel with a 20 cal

next step run your cases thru your new JAB20 fl die (a shortened 204 ruger die)

Load with 24.1 gr of RE10

39 bk or 40 vm

3850fps

(then never adnit to anyone again that you once owned an outdated crappy old 223)

Trevort's a bit funny ... first step is ... run a 223AI reamer in it and with your 40gr BT, match a 22/250 running a 50gr pill.
Cheers...

PS: And never admit you owned a bog boring 223Rem.

Con, you KNOW that no matter how fast you start that short dumpy little pill out it will shed its velocity faster that a bride sheds her dress on the wedding night.

Unlike that sleek ballistic missile that is a 20cal pill of 39gns or more :D :D
