another scope question......

Hey all, probably been done to death as are most scope tech questions. But seen as im looking at a new scope i thought id do the dumb thing and just ask instead of goooogleing cause half the time im not sure what to believe as i think some reviewers are full of shit or just cashing in the cheques from manufacturers.

Sooooooooooooo i have a semi custom 204 being built and id like to have a scope capable of getting reliable hits at 500 yards on bunnies......now i no what your thinking reliable hits hey well im saying this in regards to a scope that has great repeatabilty not necesarily the guy pulling the trigger as ive done lots of bunny shooting at this range when i used to have NF BR 8-32x56 sitting on my old 204 and there were a lot of misses but it wasnt the scopes fault cause they are pretty damn good scopes

So im after high magnification, 6-24 8-32ish any reccomendations?
Target turrets, just like them what can i say!
But the real thing thats annoying me is reticle choice, do i go a fine cross hair or a dot and rely on the turrets to dial in where i want it to go or get a bullet drop compensating reticle of some decription and allow for the drop? Also if it is a second focal plane scope does this mean the reticle is only useful at one power strength for holdover or am i reading some poor info???

And any recommendations on scope, thinking nikon, leupold, bushnell at this stage but none of them really do heaps for me to be honest.... hope this all makes sense just knocked off work so this all could be rubbish

Id also look at the sightron s3 6-24x50 best value for money on the market atm with a mildot but thats just me. I would have thought the nightforce would have been the ducks guts for you want to do most scopes with ranging ability like mildot or BDC do have a set range for them to work most are between 10x-16x

my 243 is to be used by the boys in comps as well as on the back of the ute. I bought a Nikon Monarch 8-32 x 50. Shane was quite impressed with it for the money (just over $600 landed on special at Midsouth) when he mounted it. Hasnt had much use yet tho

I like a BDC reticle, but only on a first focal plane (FFP) scope. Otherwise it is useless. Your assumption is correct, a second focal plane (SFP) reticle is only calibrated for a particular power. The yanks love their BDC reticles, but don't get the need for FFP scopes. They can be a limited bunch of shooters.

For the price you get a Leupold for in this country, I'd also throw Burris, Hakko, Zeiss, Meopta and Kahles in there. Hakko are very good value for money, but so are Meopta. I'd be looking for a 2nd hand Zeiss, Meopta or Kahles before I spent $$ on a new Leupold.

500m is a long way for a 20cal to be consistent on anything, but hey it sure is fun trying.

Couldnt agree more! So if you had the choice, NF BR 8-32x56, NXS 3.5-15x56 or perhaps a Sightron 6-24x50?

For me the NXS, but I'm not a fan of higher than 16x in the field.

Without a doubt the pic of that bunch for your intended use would be the Night Force BR.

I cant belive after owning a Sightron SIII 6-24X50 that people are trying to put them in the same class as a NF, i sold mine to go to a NF as i reckon the SIII is about the same as a loopy Vx II.

What about the new Kahles 6-24 x 56 . I'm going to move my 8-32 NXS soon and replace with the Kahles

Im starting to think high mag scopes in the field might be a bit annoying as i found it a pain in the ass if i was shooting on the go with the scope set at x8 and bunnies were here there and everywhere, not such a problem when they are 3-500 yards away they just sit still Sooo perhaps a 3-15, 4-16, 6-18 might be better suited. How many people have Nikon Monarchs? Had one but only for short period, looked nice never used it in the field though. Can get the 6-24x50 for a pretty good price, would love a NXS 3.5-15x56 but at twice the price im a bit unsure!
