Leupold fine duplex for spotlighting

As the heading said can u use the fine duplex at night looking at 6-18+40AO for new rifle coming any advice would be great thankyou

Too big mate. I have one on a 243 and you will spend all night with it on 6 power when spotlighting.

I have a 6-18 fine crosshair leopold on my HMR, & it's hopeless at night.

Forgot to add, I think my 6 X 42 M8 Leupold is the beez kneez for spotlighting.

I used my new VX11 6-18x40 Fine Duplex last Sat night under the spotlight and agree with the others.........stick with a lower magnification scope.

sticking my neck out here and going against the grain a little but if you use a top quality variable (not vx11 6-18) 12 to 14 of a night is possible, you might want to look at the weaver grand slam 6-20x40 for the money i dont think you would buy better not as good as a couple of night forces ive owned but as good or better than the vx3,s ive owned and good at night on 12 or 14 power ...the light i use is an 11 inch power beam

In my experience, a target dot or fine duplex is a waste of time unless illuminated. Just gets lost in the shadows at night. Likewise ... a good quality 6-8x power is damn useful at night.

I use my Bushnell 4200 on 10 power under the light.And would steer clear of a fine reticle for night work.

So am i the only one who will use 12x, my 6.5 - 20 gets used for spotlighting 3 times a week and sometimes even goes on 20

A 56mm objective of good quality helps a lot spotlighting and you can get away with a fine rectical if it is illuminated. My 8-32x56 nightforce is brighter on 22x than my 4-12x40 leupold on 12x. That said the leupold never comes off 12x when spotlighting. Fov becomes an issue at high powers when your in a hurry.

The 4 rifles that I use for spotlighting have a 6X, an 8X56 Doctor, a 6-18 Burris set on 14X and the lastest, a 5-15 X 50 Bushnell 3200 Elite set on 15X. Maybe as the years get on I need the higher magnification but I certainly have no problems with using 15X. I am seriously considering selling the Burris to get another Bushnell, I really like them and they work extremely well for me. Lots of my shooting is done at night detroying pests under an "occupier's" licence and in the past lots of fox shooting for skins. None of the scopes have a fine target crosshair, all are factory standard duplex. The Doctor has a reasonably heavy crosshair, but has never presented a problem to me. But, as with everything, different things for different folks.

I change my mind daily but think i am going with vx3 4.5-14-40AO standard duplex rifle will be used as a day time varminter as well as nite work so that scope should cover all that

Remember one thing Foxshooter, you can alwasy wind a 6-20 back to 12 or 10 when you want, but you can never wind a 3-9 up to 12 hey or 14 hey.

I go with Trev and mistit, I use anywhere from 8x to 20x and sometimes 32x.I do have some illuminated and some fine dup.I prefer the IR but have used the fine with good results.The better the glass and the bigger the objective the less worry.Helps to have a decent light as well.For dedicated spotlighting the weaver is better then the leupold and the Euros are better again.
