Damascus Steel Knife

Post by MISSED »

Last Sunday a mate and I traveled up to St Marys after receiving an invite from DSD
Dave’s dad is a blacksmith with 50 years in the trade experience
Dave had mentioned to his dad that I was interested in the art damascus and the invitation was given
We arrived there at 8.30 oclock and after a quick introduction we were put to work ImageImageImageImage
Amazing how much work went into making a blank from heating forge welding grinding cutting welding rinse repeat
I ended at 90 layers Image
Then with James help (I watched)he forged out a Nesmuk style knife with his “little “ power hammer
With yesterdays weather like it was I sat inside and went to work with a file and then a coffee etch (best use for blend 43)this was the resultImageImageImageImageImage
Lots of work to go but

The dark layer is 1075 and the light/bright layer is 15n20(circular saw blade).
Reason for 2 steels chosen is they have similar heat treating process and yield similar properties once treated, the fact they weld really easily is a bonus.
Would not have mattered if we used 1084 in place of 1075 but DSD currently has more 75 than 84.

Turns out that was the easy bit Macca the bloody filing and polishing takes a bit

Well done Andrew!

I love Damascus steel!

That surface grinder attachment is very cool, make flattening a knife blade a breeze!

Can't wait to see to finished knife.
